A 'real' old town, unlike Lijiang

I would have to agree with the other reviewer, this is a bit overrated and better at night. Over priced, but to be expected in a Chinese tourist town. Unlike Lijiang, this is a... read more

I would have to agree with the other reviewer, this is a bit overrated and better at night. Over priced, but to be expected in a Chinese tourist town. Unlike Lijiang, this is a much more authentic old town and is not so completely over run by commerce yet. We actually have been walking through the area and only realized... More

I like this area with it's history and structures. I took nice photos and had some drinks/deserts at the famous stop. I don't remember the name, but it was packed. It was just OK, but no competition in the area and it was packed cuz this is China.

This had been a very busy town in 50 to 100 years ago. However, its importance has greatly reduced in recent years that only a few shops were still in business.

I do not know why it must called Chikan European Style Street. It is actually row of oversea Chinese house called jilou((骑楼), which can be found in old towns which has history of migration to oversea. It is found in Guangzhou and Xiamen, part of oversea Chinese architecture with influence of Chinese and the west. In Chikan, a small town... More

The night view is probably better than the day. A bit over rated. There is a "home" to some Asian movies here. Unless you are into martial art and a movie buff, you can afford to skip this...

The street of old buildings alongside the Tanjiang river seemed to be the hub of activity and was very interesting. Many vendors there selling dried fish and dried mandarin peel in addition to drinks and snacks. Most visitors were Chinese with few Western tourists. There is no entry fee to Chikan.

Now if you are only having a daytrip to Kaiaking and their Diaolou's, then i would recommend you to skip Chikan's European style street. But if like us, you are planning on visiting Kaiping's watchtowers over a few days I would strongly recommend you to stay in Chikan instead of Kaiping itself for exploring the surroundings. Why? Because Chikan is... More

Chikan European style street has souvenir shops, food stalls making the place filthy. But anyways you dont have many options in Kaiping so might as well visit it.
