A beautiful garden with some informative exhibits about the role played by overseas chinese in the development of kaiping.
While the garden itself is pretty, the over-abundance of domestic tour groups does detract from the experience somewhat.

This place has quite a history and some of the representative watch towers of the region. However, strangely, it is not part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nonetheless, definitely should be part of the visit to the area.

Li Garden or Liyuan is UNESCO site, located at Tangkou Township, Kaiping City. It is a big garden complex, which you may need time to walk around. After the gate entry is the museum of sort of Kaiping immigration flow to the California, the local called Kam-san, literally means gold mountain. Many went there as gold miners, and the later flow is business providing services for the gold miners there. Some make the fortune and sent monies back to Kaiping. Li Garden or Liyuan (立园) was one of the success story. It was constructed by Kaiping overseas Chinese Mr. Xie Weili .The family house is not the typical watchtowers you found around Kaiping, but worth a visit to know and understand the success story of the oversea Chinese from Kaiping, that is the reason why it was selected as UNESCO site.It is normally visited together with Zilli Village which is nearby. There is only one small watchtower in side the complex for the ladies, other than that is the buildings for the brothers of the family. It is rather a complex of old bungalow and garden. For visitors who are interested in architecture and buildings, the combination of European and Chinese style in the buildings will of much to study on the interaction of west and east on the life of oversea Chinese. The villa is also having a Chinese garden complex with beautiful landscapes, but when I visited there, there is some new addition of modern tourist element that may not match to the era of the garden.
You can take bus from Guanzhao, via Fengcun bus station (芳村汽车站) at Kengkou Metro Station, From Zhuhai/Macau via Zhuhai Gobgbei Long Distance Bus Station, walk across the large square in front of the border gate, just walk toward right, and cross the road to opposite you will find the main bus station( there is a bus terminal along the road, do not confuse with it, just cross the road), or even Hong Kong to Kaiping city. Get accommodation in the Kaiping city or Chikan town, and travel to Li Garden/Zilli Village by hired car or bus. If you use bus, expected to walk some distance from the entrance of the main road to the gate of the village.
The bus station to most tourist destinations can be taken from Yici Passenger Station(Yici keying zhongzhan). To Liyuan, take bus from Yici bus station, no 17(17 Lu) go to Liyuan, get off at Liyuan Lu Kou stop, and walk to the entrance gate of Liyuan. If your hotel is in town, you need to take local bus from Changsa Bus station from the downtown or bus stops to Yici bus station, take No2 and No3. There are also free shuttle bus to Liyuan if you bought the combined ticket for the tourist destination in Kaiping, which you can take from Chikan town to Liyuan.
Luyuan may not have watch tower cluster like the other destinations in Kaiping, but to understand the Kaiping oversea Chinese and their stories, Liyuan is a must visit to understand why UNESCO status was given to Kaiping.

While pretty, Li Garden simply isn't worth the ¥100 admission. We've been to nicer gardens in China for less (we live in Beijing and have visited Suzhou, both of which boast some of the country's best gardens and parks). The tour groups that frequent the Li Garden (Chinese tourists seem to love gardens and rocks) also make the attraction a pain to visit and get around. During weekends, expect tourists everywhere. There are a couple of diaolous inside the garden that you can enter. That in itself is an interesting experience but really not worth the entrance fee either. Too bad the ¥180 Kaiping attractions ticket includes admission to the garden, or we would've skipped it.

The Kaiping region are clusters of Diaolou structures that were solidly built with masonry and/or reinforced concrete so that they are strong enough to prevent break-ins by local bandits that roamed this area back in the early to mid 1900's. The Kaiping region is very meaningful to me in that this area was where my parents were born and raised, but not in the "luxury" areas. Around about 1930 to 1950 time period, many of the residents of the Kaiping area had "abandoned" the area for a "better life" elsewhere. Many of these Kaiping residents had moved to the USA - including my parents, uncles, aunts and cousins.
The Chinese government (along with UNESCO) had recognized the historical significance of this area and the unique architecture of the Diaolou buildings. UNESCO had designated four (4) different Diaolou clusters in Kaiping as UNESCO recognized historical sites - however, the Kaiping Garden (or Liyuan Garden) Diaolou clusters did not received the UNESCO designation which is a shame because It is probably the most colorful and photogenic of the different clusters of buildings.
Upon entering the Kaiping Garden (Liyuan or Li Garden) Diaolou cluster area, there is a very nice Visitor Center and Museum. The Museum has interesting information about the history about the Kaiping area and it people. It also has information about various families who had migrated from Kaiping to the USA and/or Canada.
After exiting the Museum, the pathway leads to a very lovely Garden area that is beautiful and relaxing to walk through. Past the Garden area is where the Diaolou buildings are located - some single level and some multi-level. The multi-level structures are much larger in size and are for the "wealthy" families of the area. This area is very nice to walk around and explore - go inside the open Diaolou buildings to see how they look like back then.
Very worthwhile and interesting to visit the Kaiping Garden area - especially if you know what happened to the people who had once lived in this area.

These buildings are well preserved with what appear to be furniture of the early 20th China. The story being this place is interesting with a well off business family opting to keep their families in a beautiful and safe place while they went out and built their businesses. The gardens are remnants of what were clearly an amazing place, but there is enough there to give a sense of what it must have been like.
A very different lifestyle too, with references to multiple wives....
We were able to use out tickets for the other village here, so I do not think that the cost was High, particularly where the place is clean and well preserved.
Food sellers, while at the entrance are not allowed in, so our visit was very relaxed and enjoyable.
I had wanted to visit this unique World Heritage site for some time and was not disappointed.

The best Diaolou in this area is in Li Gardens. Very luxuriously built with an extended garden which adds to it's charm. The Diaolous are open for you to go into and explore..
The entry ticket is covered if you take the combined ticket for Zili villages + this. Otherwise on it's own it is on the expensive side of around 100 RMB.
The architecture is interesting because it borrows heavily from European architecture but has it's own local flavor as well. The garden is calming if not exceptionally manicured.
Quite nice to walk around for a couple of hours.
Toilets are available inside but I did not see any other amenities such was water/food inside the complex. When you go out of the complex gate, you will find these.
Wechat as payment for ticket is accepted.
Sports shoes recommended, parking is available.
Not to be skipped at all if you are going to Kaiping.

This is where we saw the most luxurious diaolou. It was really interesting and well worth visiting. The setting was very pretty too.

I went to Li garden after reading your comments, I agree that this is not as beautiful and interesting as we think when we read the tourist guides. Some elements in the garden are nice, but the garden is enough small and expensive.
