Did you know that this breathtaking Tudor styled monastery was the famous Adisham Bungalow built in 1931 by Sir Thomas Lister Villers, an English planter? Therefore, leaving Good Fridays and Xmas apart, this 10 acre land is available for viewing on weekends and approx. Another 23 Sri Lankan public holidays a year!
The Benedictine fathers are well known for cultivating and producing their very own line of natural Adisham fruit jams, jellies, cordials and chutneys. Gains from these fruitful jars of joy are utilized towards the maintenance of this beautiful 90 year old Tudor styled stone structure from the British era.

Adisham Bungalow is said to have been built in 1931 in a massive 10 acre land in Halutale. It has been home to a number of prominent personalities in the country and also attached to some of the key incidents in the past. As of today, it is managed by the Roman catholic church and functions as a monetary and a museum. The entire Bungalow is well preserved with the vintage furniture. Its certainly a must visit site in the area.

St. Benedict's Monastery so called Adisham Bungalow is situated about 5 km from Haputhale town at Haputhale-Boralanda road. It can be reached by a private vehicle or have to walk about 1 km if you go by a bus.
Adisham Bungalow was built by Sir Thomas Villers in 1931 and later it was purchased by Sri Lankan Roman Catholic church in 1961. Currently this place is functioned as St. Benedict's Monastery. Adisham Bungalow is opened for public on weekends, public holidays, poya days and school vaccations from 9am to 4.30pm. You have to buy a ticket to enter the place. They only show a small portion of the Bungalow to the public as rest of the place is functioned as a monastery. You can buy some products of St. Benedict's Monastery including Jam and cordial. It is worth to visit there .

One of the best Architecture season in 1930, Part of it is closed to the public due to religious activities. The roof tiles are made out of small wood. It has been very well treated for weather conditions. Nicely maintained surrounding. Select the bench if possible to feel the great building.

This is a monastery belongs to the Roman Catholics Church of Sri Lanka. A beautiful bungalow built-in 1931. Located in Haputhale, Badulla district and named after the Adisham a city in the English country of Kent.

Inside there is a small museum that carries old books, coins hand paintings, ornaments and furniture belong to the historical era. ( no videos and photos allowed inside the bungalow). Nothing much to see other than the landscape and beautifully built bungalow.

It's better if there is written information about the bungalow and artefacts in the museum so guests can understand the real value of this place. Washrooms are old and not very much good. Overall a nice experience.

What a place!

Had a fabulous time with my aunt and uncle walking around on my birthday. The amount of exhibitions and knowledge you can acquire from a place like this is astonishing.

I'd recommend you visit this not in one go as you will be absolutely exhausted as you have to walk alot . You should attempt to visit it in probably 3 days if you want to actually learn anything.

Architecturally speaking, it is fantastic, just shows how great the buildings of old were. Being around for over 100 years and still holding all its glory, really amazes me.
A lot to learn from this place
I cannot wait to come back more times and check the new exhibitions.

Heaven for Nature lovers.
We stayed there for 4 days. it is an archaeological master peace. Built by a Scottish planter Sir Thomas Villiers in 1931, was told he wanted to have the weather as in Scotland. His wife was a painter and his picture painted by her is hanging there. Only part of the building is open to the public now. Beautifully standing with the majestic look on a cliff at the Thangamale National park at Haputhaleee, Sri Lanka.. Currently, it is owned by the Franciscan fathers. They are having a beautiful flower garden.
There is a little chapel with prayers and Holy mass being said and you can participate.
This is heaven for the bird watchers as we have recorded lots of endemic rare birds of Sri Lanka, There is a trade outlet where you can buy all types of jam and Vine made in the monastery itself. Prior booking is needed to stay there.

While the architecture is amazing, we are allowed only to see the entrance n his library full of books, some drawings by Mrs.Adisham. There is a guide to explain and give a tour. He also said they allow 6 rooms to be used by guests on reservation as per FB basis.
As this is a monastery, it is open only on weekends and public holidays.
They allowed the vehicle in after paying LKR 700. It was raining so couldn't enjoy the garden. But it well maintained n beautiful.

The Adisham Bungalow is located surrounded by a tranquil environment adjacent to a forest reserve.

A short distance from the haputale town, it boasts beautiful scenery, well maintained gardens and a rich history dating back almost a century.

There is an outlet selling produce of the farms managed by the monastery as well as refreshments.

You have to check the opening times and days before you visit, and its best to avoid public holidays and weekends as it would be crowded.

It's an ancient castle in a lovely atmosphere. The castle was built from stones and feels like british ages. The place has a nice garden with beautiful flowers and a lot of fruits. They have organic products in their store for fair prices. Washrooms available. The road is a bit narrow and the parking space is not very good.
