Normally for most foreign visitors Imjimgak is just a stop along the way to other sites in the DMZ, such as Dora-san Observatory (overlooking North Korea; on the southern line of the Demilitarized Zone, DMZ), Panmunjom (called the Joint Security Area, JSA; on the Military Demarcation Line, MDL) itself, and/or the 3rd Tunnel (dug by the North Koreans in the 1970s under the DMZ through the bedrock as an invasion route). It does have several points worth seeing, however, including the Bridge of Freedom (across which trains had resumed up to the Kaesong Industrial Complex), an old railway engine that was caught in the DMZ but now placed here as a memorial, several monuments, and a fence where South Koreans have posted messages and photos to lost family members still in the North. There are Korean restaurants and souvenir stands as well. I have visited more than a few times over the past decade. If one has a day, it would be best to take a half-day Panmunjom tour combined with lunch and another half-day tour of the 3rd Tunnel.

Coming from Seoul, this is the first stop of the DMZ tour. It is a surprising place, being a cross between an open air collection of artifacts from the Korean War (eg a locomotive which was blown up during the conflict), monuments to the war and to the United Nations and a funfair, reminiscent of what you find at Niagara Falls. It takes about 45 minutes to walk around and sets the scene neatly for what follows.

I came to Imjingak Resort as a pit-stop with my tour ground to see the JSA at the demilitarized zone. There were a few historical things to see here, a small amusement park, and a few places to eat. It isn't a place that I would go out of my way just to see but it was a nice stop on the way to my destination. I ate at the Rodem Restaurant (로템 레스토랑) which served delicious traditional Korean cuisine and I tried a cane ice cream cone from the neighboring convenient store which was also delicious.

A resort area (and safe) with restaurants and monuments for South Korean people to remember the separation of the country and waiting for the reunion of the families. A stopover for tourist if you join the local tours to the DMZ and tunnel activities.

Imjingak is a popular area just 7km from the DMZ. It is where most tour buses stop for a short break before entering the DMZ. If you are not visiting the DMZ or Joint Security Area, this is as far as one can journey before any Security Check points. There are various war memorial monuments around the park, the Freedom Bridge, an observation deck with restaurants and even an amusement park.
