It was an enjoyable 2 hour cruise. Most time spent this time (we have done this 3 years ago too) heading to/from Nicaraguan border. Saw many species of animals and birds and flora. Covered outdoor tour boat boat holds 40 people. I recommend it.

This is a nice way to spend an hour cruising up the Rio Frio. Lots to see along the sides of the river. We saw two cayman just hanging out on the bank of the river. Lots of different birds, including a stick bird, great potoo that is apparently very rare. Our guide spotted a few Jesus lizards that are a beautiful green and also saw a few small bats. The far end of the cruise takes you to the border with Nicaragua and it is fun to hold both a Costa Rica flag and Nicaragua flag for a photo op. It was fun seeing a few playful white faced monkeys. This is worth the stop and the guides are enthusiastic and fun.

We took the river cruise as one of the stops on a nine day Caravan Tour. We boarded the boat after a nice, simple buffet lunch at a local restaurant. It was a moderate two or three block walk to the river from the restaurant. It was raining when we started out, so we were glad it was a covered boat. It cleared off very soon after we started and the critters put on a show! There was something for everyone. We saw lizards (Jesus, basilisk, iguanas); monkeys (capuchin, howler); Long-nosed bats; and many birds (jacanas, ibis, swallows, herons, anhingas, cormorants, parakeets, falcons, hawks, kites, and kingfishers). The sharp-eyed guide even spotted a Great Potoo! The guide was excellent at spotting and identifying the wildlife and the boat pilot was great at positioning the boat so everyone got a good view, no matter on what side they were sitting. The guide invited the "serious" birders with cameras and binocs up onto the bow to help with the spotting and so we could get better shots. The cruise went both upstream and down. We even stopped for a photo op at the Nicaragua border. All in all, an enjoyable experience.

We went on two river tours with OAT and this one was our least favorite. It was interesting as we did see many birds, but not as much fun as the Mangrove tour we did on the Pacific side where there were American Crocodiles as well as monkeys, iguanas , and lizard as well as beautiful birds like the scarlet macaws. However this is worth doing, but also do the mangrove tour.

It's a muddy river (Rio Frio) and so you see a couple of canines (no crocs) and some common birds (white egrets and kingfishers). A maybe a lizard. The drive from Fortuna was long and boring. The lunch at the local resturant in Los Chiles was horrible and sewage was flowing down the ditch next to the sidewalk outside the resturant. What a stink.
