Lovely woods - Lucy is now missing!
May 2021
Banstead Woods is ancient woodland surrounded by rare chalk downland. Although it has a large car park at Holly Lane, it gets very busy at times. There are large grass islands that look nice, but perhaps could be reduced in size to allow more parking? However, it's ideally situated and has an excellent small food/drink/ice cream van at the busiest times of the week although this does take up a couple of car spaces.

The 5km Nature Trail is a must if you can manage it and can be downloaded from the Explore Surrey website (worth doing because a couple of the numbered markers are missing). Once away from the vicinity of the car park, it's much quieter and lovely especially in bluebell season. There are some small inclines but nothing too taxing and the surface is good for walking. We saw a man on a mobility scooter (the first kissing gate is designed to accommodate such a vehicle) but other reviewers have complained that it is not buggy friendly. The reality is that it's really only the first stretch that is a little rocky and uneven and the rest is fine.

The Narnia sculptures are all near the car park and the trail passes them all (don't miss the witch hidden in the dark woods to the right). However, please note that Lucy under a lamppost is now missing so don't spend time looking for it. From pictures on the internet, it was quite tall and thin and now only the base remains. Hopefully it has been removed for safe keeping and not stolen.

So definitely worth a visit, but plan your visit as you may struggle to park. Alternatively Chipstead Station is not too far away so let the train take the strain!

Not for people with buggies or mobility issues
Apr 2021 • Family
Not buggy friendly at all; steep hills, pathways very uneven. One review said it was good for prams; I highly disagree. Left a very disgruntled Mum as my 18 month old was fed up of being flung around. Not for people with mobility issues. Not very well signposted either.

easy to get too, decent pathes, not too big, plenty of woodland lovely trees and open grassland
Mar 2021
go here regularly for dog walking, love the woods and the open grass;land, sculptures add a great touch.
it can get busy in the carpark but there is plenty of space for walking, quite often walk from further away, none of the pathes are too steep.
it can be muddy when it rains but there is plenty of shelter from wind and rain in the woods, nice place for a picnic which we take often,

Amazing woodland walk
Jan 2021 • Family
Visited Banstead woods today with 15 & 9 year olds, was lovely walk with uphill walk from car park. Make sure you have proper wellies as it is very muddy and slippery. Beautiful views of countryside and lovely wood walk. There is grass & wood walk and you can take different routes. The car park is free, you might have to wait for parking if it’s full as you can’t park on road. There are dogs without leads too. There is snack truck and hot dog & bacon bap was amazing. There are statues of lamp post and Aslan from Narnia, kids love it.

Ruined by too many visitors
Dec 2020
This was once a beautiful place. Now it is grossly over-crowded with litter everywhere. Those who live in nearby Chipstead have long been unable to walk here due to the dangers of chronic traffic. Now we cannot even drive as the car park is completely full most of the day (with visitors and those who use it to park up and catch trains). Reigate and Banstead encourage visitors from outside of the area yet several years ago decided to demolish the toilet facilities. Recently (especially during the covid months) some visitors have taken to reliving themselves in the woods and leaving their mess behind together with soiled tissue. I clean up after my dog, but I'm wondering if I should bother if non dog owners are going to treat the place as a dustbin / toilet. I'm increasingly getting fed up with my dog finding chicken bones, nappies and human poo. The damage being done to the footpaths being over-trodden (think mud-bath) and children using the place as a playground has really spoilt this once lovely natural tranquil oasis. Very sad and a pale shadow of its former self.

Walk amongst beautiful trees, and get beautiful views from edge of woods
Oct 2020
Visited Banstead Woods for 1st time - great walk amongst beautiful trees, with still uphill section from the car park (great to get the blood flowing) and beautiful views over countryside from the edge of the woods.

A hidden gem with Narnia sculptures
Aug 2020
Fascinating to discover this (from a throwaway comment in a FB post) virtually on our doorstep (one of the benefits of C-19) and it was a great shady place to walk on a sweltering morning.
We found it hard to know exactly where we were and were sure we doubled back and repeated our route without realising, just in the quest to find the Narbia sculptures, which are superb. Unfortunately there is no signage, nor trail maps, nor even helpful notices at the start in the car park (there are notices but they are old).
After three hours we found three of the sculptures but understand there was a another recent one which completely eluded us, a challenge for next time.
Shame there is no nearby cafe, the woods were busy and would have done a roaring trade.

Would have been amazing had it not been for all the dog poo
Aug 2020 • Family
Beautiful woodland walk. But I thought we were going on a Narnia trail not a trip to Pooh corner (dog poo corner that is!) 💩 Dog walkers here should be ashamed of what they are leaving behind. Council also to blame for no poo bins of penalty notice signs. Please somebody, sort it! We began counting poos half way round and found 20!
