Traveled with friendsWritten November 27, 2013

Traveled as a coupleWritten December 11, 2013

Traveled with familyWritten January 9, 2015

We went to the bird center and saw tons of birds including a spoonbill, stilt, heron, egrets, and various ducks. Simply wonderful! Txepe explained all about the birds. A great place.

Visited here on Thursday 27th Sept. Was initially unsure whether to go in, as we are not real “bird spotters”. However, we were really please we did as both the exhibition part was really interesting/ informative, and the staff were really helpful too. They helped set up the binoculars and point them on the birds and were really helpful/ knowledgeable. Well worth a visit whether you are a bird fan or not, you will be pleased you went.

Beautifully designed center with many playful touches. Loved the audio guided self tour which included a video, large maps of migratory patterns, several viewing stations and use of binoculars. Staff was clearly passionate about their work with migratory birds.

The 5€ entry fee includes a walk-through audio-visual experience which is first-class and allows the visitor to see the centre in an informative and instructive way. No extra costs for the audio guide and the staff were as helpful as you will hope to find anywhere; an absolute treat for wildlife expert or novice.
The standard of presentation is rather unsettling because we didn’t expect anything quite so ‘polished’ or professional - a massive well done to the staff and the institutions funding it.
If you have a couple of hours (you’ll probably want to stay longer in migratory seasons) and you have any interest in wildlife (especially birds) then you MUST visit; I just wish we’d stopped there long before this trip.....we will be back, definitely.
The only minus point is that there is no cafe facility nearby - the centre has a ‘library/rest area’ with vending machines but you’ll need to bring your own lunch if visiting for a day.

The estuary of the Oka river on the north coast about an hour east of Bilboa is the location of several popular beach resorts, with excellent beaches on either side of the estuary at Mundaka, Laida and Laga. The wide sandspits protect a region of marshes which form an important stopover for migratory birds. The Urdaibai visitor centre provides an excellent range of information about these birds, including videos, and audio tour, and expert commentary of birds seen through the telescope and displayed on a large screen. A fabulous experience for a nominal price.

I was there late in the day and so had the place more or less to myself. The descriptions and guided information are good for education, especially if you aren't familiar with birds of the area. The viewing area is terrific, lots of telescopes and binoculars available and multilanguage audio guides, all included in the modest ticket price. The staff are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and show you any special birds that are there that day. I really enjoyed it and wished I had longer.

It is really worth a visit if you like marsh birds. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, and showed us how to use the various cameras and binoculars. A good way to spend 2 or 3 relaxing hours

Bird nature reserve with wetlands.A very informative overview of the area with some amazing photos of the local flora and fauna.
There is then time to look at the birds through powerful telescopes.
