About
Casa Primicia is the oldest civil building in the medieval town of Laguardia, the place where the Church received the taxes of the peasants since the XV Century, the first winery in Rioja Alavesa. Visiting Casa Primicia you will discover the true history of wine in Rioja and you will be amazed by our incredible caves digged 900 years before where we keep our best secret; our wine.

    Well worth the visit
Located in the old town of Laguardia this is the oldest building and from the street it’s impossible to guess what is behind the imposing door. It’s been tastefully renovated in a way that preserves and shows it’s history. The visit to the cellars is followed by the tasting room upstairs with wonderful views over the surrounding viyards.

    Great Experience
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at Casa Primicia. The tour we took was as much about the history of the region, and, this building, in particular, as it was about tasting wine. Our tour consisted of only 3 couples and it was very ably led by a very friendly young woman. This tour was a real highlight from our trip to Spain.

    Hidden Gem in La Rioja!
Casa Primicia is the oldest civil building in the medieval town of Laguardia, the place where the Church received the taxes of the peasants since the XV Century, the first winery in Rioja Alavesa. We had a private tour for (2) since we are mostly english speakers. The inside is very small compared to other wineries but it very charming with a ton of history. Almudena, our tour guide was very professional with a lot of knowledge of Casa Primicia. We tried their Blanco, Crianza & Julian Madrid Reserva. There were beautiful views from the upstairs tasting room. All of these wine were fantastic. We decided to purchase a bottle of the 2016 Pensante Special Selection from advice of Almudena. This winery is a must visit if you are in La Rioja! Not only is the winery and the wine great, but the charming village of LaGuardia is a must see.

    Informative and interesting
Arrived for our tour to discover we were double booked with another private group in Spanish. We had arrived 45 minutes early, and since it’s a long ways from Alaska to Laguardia, we convinced the nice lady, who admitted it was their error, to give us abbreviated tour. So the three of us received a very good tour, albeit significantly shorter than advertised. We were surprised to be charged the same amount, but had a great time anyway, the pours were generous, and the tour was very informative and worth our time and money in spite of the mix up. Would recommend, but would also recommend following up to verify schedules if you are on a once in a life time trip!

What a beautiful bodega! We had a wonderful tour and tasting here. They made us feel welcome and safe. Our guide Juan gave a very in-depth and knowledgable tour of the cellars in English. The tastings were great, with extra nibbles. A must visit if you are in LaGuardia, would recommend to all. It’s tucked away just inside the town walls with incredible 11th century cellars.

Located in a medieval building, this winery offers tours of the building and its underground caves. The tour explains both the ancient way of making wine and their modern processes. The winery produces around 12 different wine's including single varietals, blends and the traditional wine's made in Rioja.

Wonderful building, excellent guide and some fantastic wine - all in Spain’s oldest functioning winery. What more could you ask for? Learn about the history of leguardia, the casa premicia itself, and the wine making process. Tours cost €10 and are available through English, and take about 1 hour 15 minutes.

We had a great time touring this bodega with my wife and son. The tour took us back in time to about the 15th century when the facility was owned by the church organization. The history and stories made our tour very interesting and memorable as did the detailed presentation about the painstaking process of making wine the casa primicia way. Our guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating. She gamely answered all our questions the best she could and even got reservations for us at one of the notable local restaurants. At the end of tour, we were brought to the tasting room and got to taste 3 of their wines which to my simple untrained palette was smooth, fruity and left a lingering pleasant taste. Even their young wines tasted nice and smooth. This bodega is also proud about their organic wines (coming from organically grown grapes) which undergoes a process that uses less chemicals or preservatives. I also learned that they are one of the few wineries that are able to grow cabarnet suvignon in their vine yards and have a few signature wines that blend this variety into them. Was glad to have made it here. And would recommend this bodega anytime. After our tour, we explored the town of La Guardia (which is very small) and left us in awe with all the medieval architecture well preserved.

A few weeks ago, my wife and I visited the charming Villa of LaGuardia. There is no doubt that the highlight of our visit was the Casa Primicia tour. This site is part Museum, part wine cellar, part tasting school.

The visit lasted a little more than one hour, and we were very pleased with the descriptions given about wine making techniques, wine history and many other details. The young man in charge of our tour spoke excellent English and seemed quite knowledgeable. I am sure there could be similarly good winery tours in the surroundings of town, but I doubt there could be any one better.

The tasting session included two wines, a little olive oil and bread. Everything was magnificent. The T and G label wines ones were unique. In my case, I also enjoyed the countryside views from the windows of the tasting room.

We have been in wine tours at several other regions of Spain and France, this one ranks at the very top of them.

Try to visit Casa Primicia and the rest of this charming town, it will be a unique experience.

We are so pleased we chose to visit Casa Primicia - the oldest building in Laguardia dating back to the 11th century. Mikel led the three of us through this wonderful buliding explaining with great knowledge and passion both the history of the buliding and the Madrid family winemakers. So interesting. We finished the tour with a tasting of a selection of wines , looking out across vineyards as the first snow of the season fell. Magical! Needless to say we purchased very reasonably priced wine and are continuing to enjoy it with fond memories of our visit. Thank you Mikel - a wonderful morning!
