Probably the castle most worth visiting in this area. It’s a steep walk up to the castle. We had a stop in the church on the way up (very interesting) and then made it to the castle. They have a good film to watch which the custodian will put on in either English or Portuguese. There is information and a museum upstairs but all in Portuguese. The views are superb.

The maintenance is excellent, as well as the rest of the village - including the walls all around. Next to the castle, you'll find the ruins of the adjacent old village, originated by Christians in the first AD centuries and later kept by the Muslims around XI century.

We visited the castle in the early evening guided by Fernando, a local guide , who had keys to the castle and was very enthusiastic, loaded with information, interesting and nice person.
When night falls, it gets dark up there! But, sunset is stunning with panoramic views.
Fernando showed us living quarters, the church, the dig and pointed out waterways, walls, walkways and mosaics.
A lot seen in a very short time, an immersion in local culture and history.

The Castle is free, and offers outstanding views of the area and town. It is not much of a climb to the top. Also, take a few minutes to walk around the Roman ruins being excavated at the foot of the castle. There are some lovely floor mosaics and many room structures. Even a clear channel for water that runs to a fountain.

It's worth a visit. The town itself its like a living museum. Well preserved with small road. You actually can explore the Castle itself free and you will only pay if you wanted to visit the tower with few showcase and short film about the place itself. It;s 2 Euros only, so please don't hesitate :)

Definitely a worthwhile walk up to a stunning, panoramic view - I went near sunset which was a good time to visit.

This is a great place to see Guadiana River and all area around. The place has an easy access for a castle and you only need to pay if you want to go up in the main tower.

Well restored, originally Arab, castle with clear explanations on the remaining elements and with superb view from the walls over Mertola and the surrounding landscape including the Guadiana river.

We spent the afternoon wandering around the church, Islamic village and castle. Really well laid out, with a great level of information to understand what life was like over the different ruling eras. Beautiful views from the top of the castle. Friendly staff on hand to answer questions.
