If you are looking for an authentic Japanese everyday shopping experience away from tourists area, you should visit Musashikoyama shopping district. In the Train Station building, you'll find amazing grocery store that has fresh food, including sushi, sashimi, different kinds of fish, pre-cooked dishes, and so many other awesome foods and daily items. From the store, go walk around the terminal and enter Musashikoyama Shopping district with roof for any weather conditions. The usual Starbacks, McDonald's to authentic, Japanese restaurants like, suishi, ramen, tonkatsu, soba and more. Japanese tea store , 100yen store, pet shop, book store, pachinko, clothing, and many more. Always lots of people, but that makes it also exciting. Great for family, friends or by yourself. Make it a day trip by visiting Rinshinomori park for nice walk and Soba Kappo Kurata for authentic Japanese food.

Want to shop in the rain? Come here for a less crowded shopping experience than other places like Nakano or Shinjuku but be prepared for more discount and neighborhood type shops. There are lots of repeats too- at least 3 drug stores, several tiny clothing boutiques for older women, two Family Marts and a Lawsons. This is a place to buy pets though with dedicated dog and cat stores. You can find fish at a large general store at the start of the arcade right near the train station.
Second floors of buildings seem to house a variety of tiny bars, restaurants and nail salons or Hair Makes. Worth a browse on a rainy day for a couple of hours.

We were staying in Shinagawa so we took the subway from Shinagawa station to Meguro station and there we transferred to the Tokyu Meguro Private line to get to Musashi Koyama shopping arcade. It was an easy subway ride.

There are very few tourists here and the residents all shop here with all their bikes. No designer brands here but lovely little stores with everyday things that residents need.
We especially enjoyed the dollar store, Daiso, and Liquor Off where many vintage glassware from breweries and wineries are sold here for 50yen!

Our highlight of this shopping trip was a Yakitori place on one of the side streets. There were no tables to sit as everyone just stands around the counter with hundreds of chicken skewers for 160 yen each. There were chicken skin skewers, chicken livers and hearts, chicken with sashiso peppers or leeks, and chicken balls. The list goes on and there was even a dipping sauce. It is on an honor system so you take as many skewers as you like and then you do not pay until at the very end. You can see the cooks grilling the skewers on the large hibachi right there infront of you.

The 3 of us had 11 skewers and we could have eaten even more but thought that was a nice appetizer before a sit down lunch.
You can order soft drinks and beer and they will provide you a plate if a drink is ordered otherwise no plates.

The skewers were so delicious!!! One of the most unique places we have eaten at for sure.

You can buy a lot of things here. I wandered through quite by accident. A quintessential Tokyo experience.

As a Japanese grown up in the area, I can say this shopping district is a fun place to visit. It is located just few train station ride from Meguro (yamanote-transit). As soon as you get out of Musashikoyama Station, you'll see an entrance to the shopping street with awnings (great for rainy days.). You can go two ways, but start with the street on the left. It has more stores to browse. You will find unique clothing (yukata to funky design and unusual styles), house hold items and foods. The street is off limit to cars, but watch out for bicycles. Most items selling there are very reasonably priced, including food. I usually get Japanese dishes or cookwares, tea, nori, pickles and traditional sweets. Stop by at a coffee shop for break, and when I get hungry, I'll have ramen or sushi. Example of stores: McDonalds (of course!), Dollar stores, pachinko, software, toys and books, furniture, bicycles, pet shops, grocery, hair salon, Japanese pastry, coffee shop, ramen, sushi, Chinese, yakiniku, seasonal fresh market and more. If you take your car, there is a three story parking near the center of the street. Get the stamp from stores for validation. Musashikoyama Station also houses a very nice grocery store in the same building.Nice place to stop at the end for your final shopping spree. Happy shopping!

This shopping arcade is claimed to be the longest covered arcade in all of Japan, 1km in length. I frequently jog or walk through this area. At one end is Musashi Koyama Station, the other end Nakahara Kaido (avenue) which stretches down to Gotanda. Consider this arcade is typically mid-grade shops and stores, rather than for luxury brands clustered in the Ginza or Marunouchi areas.

Considered the longest shopping arcade in Japan, it's a great place for local shopping. The arcade is completely covered and doesn't allow motorized vehicles which makes for a relaxing shopping experience. There are many small, local shops, drug stores, 100-yen stores and restaurants. The prices are very good and it's a nice break from the chaotic crowds of Shibuya and Harajuku.

A couple years ago, what made the area really interesting was the maze of little bars and restaurants near the shopping mall. Now all that has been put down and will be replaced by a residential tower. Having said that, the mall is lively with a nice mix of shops and restaurants. The indian for example is good. If you need a haircut and are not too worried about its cost, plenty of places to choose from.
