The area
Address
Neighborhood: Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

- allthingsitalyCounty Durham, United Kingdom792 contributionsWhat's not to like...?We made the decision on a VERY cold and wet Saturday to visit Sunshine City, easy to get to via the subway and at least we'd be dry. "We" being my wife and I along with our daughter and 9 year old grand-daughter. The mall is immaculately clean, no mess, no badly behaved or scruffy looking kids ( UK malls look poor in comparison ) and a fair enough selection of shops. Needless to say, the youngest member was more than happy with the Pokemon, Disney and Totoro stores. We picked up a few seasonal - i.e. limited edition- soft toys from Disney. The food outlets were dotted around, again immaculately clean with pleasant 'happy to help you' staff and various options on the food front. On the downside the aquarium and observatory were closed but didn't really bother us. I do find it odd though that they were closed given the mall itself was open to all and sundry. We finished up spending around 4 hours at Sunshine City and will probably go back to pick up some presents for family back home.Visited March 2020Written March 14, 2020

- Iris GSweden126 contributionsA mall for everyoneIts a great shoppingcenter for both families and couples. Lots of different stores with clothes, shoes, toys and almost anything else you could look for in a mall. Lots of restaurants and cafés aswell. On the top deck there is an aquarium and terrarium that are also worth if a visit if you already plan to visit the mall.Visited September 2019Traveled as a coupleWritten March 9, 2020
- Asian Traveler5 contributionsSurprise MondayAgree with many of the reviewers that this shopping mall has a lot to offer with a huge variety of stores and restaurants. We were intrigued with the Pokémon Café and Pokémon Mega center, as well. But, we (my wife and I) were surprised to see many of the shops closed all day on Monday! The Starbucks right outside the shopping center was *not* open either even though it said that they were supposed to be open at 7:30 AM on their website. That was not the case. But, we ended up walking elsewhere to get our breakfast.Visited February 2023Written February 27, 2023

Welcome to Sunshine City. Less than a ten minute walk from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station and just north of the station. Just a warning, it can get tricky to finding your way around, to find the right place as to where you want to go to. There are multiple building sections here and there is a lot you can do here. Shop, eat, and other various arcades/ cool stuff to do. I would highly recommend to look for the information desk, on the main floor, in the center of the building. Where you can get a pamphlet in English, to help you to where you want to go. Or go online, type in Sunshine City on your Google search and you can download a PDF of the floor plan, of various places to shop, eat, and entertain you. Sky Circus Sunshine 60 Observation Deck is on one of top of the floors, of one of buildings. J-World, Namja, Fountain Plaza, Sunshine Aquarium, Konica Minolta Planetarium, shopping of all types of stuff, and a great selections of restaurants/ places to eat or snack, on various floors throughout this place. There is also Sunshine City Prince hotel next to it, if you want to stay for a night or two. The planetarium is on the top floor and shares with Sunshine City Aquarium. I recommend, before you buy your tickets, to look at what shows/ subjects are playing. They have different shows, at different times, and is even marked off if the show will have English commentary in the show. Also, different shows will have different prices. When you buy your tickets at the kiosk, it will be marked off as to what you want to go to. Aquarium or Konica Minolta Planetarium. The tickets are roughly $12 and up, depending on what you are going to see. As for the aquarium, I can't honestly remember, but I thought the prices were reasonable. It is not a huge aquarium, but still pretty good and worth checking out, while you are here. I would recommend this place to anyone, that happens to be here. You can make a great day out, while you're at Sunshine City, because it has a lot to offer for you to enjoy, without being outside, when the weather is bad. Or even if there weather is good. Me and my friend had a great time while I was here.Visited October 2018Traveled with friendsWritten February 9, 2019

We went to visit the Pokemon Mega Centre which was great. We also had a wander around the rest of the Mall. A really nice lunch at a tempura restaurant. Super cheap and delicious. Had a coffee at a chain store (Tulleys?) which was pleasant. Some cool TV, cartoon, disney stores. Also some nice stores. All staff were spoke to were friendly and patient (I don't speak Japanese). Much cooler than a Westfield or AMP mall.

This was the first mall we shopped n when we arrived in Japan, mainly because our hotel was connected to it! So, the fastest way for us to find our hotel was actually to find the mall. And it’s a pretty big mall, about a 15 minute walk from the metro station. Good thing is that it’s all through the massive network of underground broadwalks so you don’t have to suffer in winter or summer. Of course, the mall is home to the Pokémon centre which EVERYBODY goes to, well, it seems like everybody is there in any case. But, nevertheless, a homage visit to the Pokémon centre is a must for the kids.

Pokémon store was overpriced and not as great as my kids were expecting. The aquarium was good but nothing exciting. You could however pay a little extra to play with rabbits and guinea pigs which my toddler loved. We bought what we thought was food from the vending machine to feed the animals. It had a piece of paper in it so we gave it to the attendant who threw it in the bin. No one in this area spoke English so we had no idea why that happened. NamJaTown was a waste of money. Even with an English map we had no idea what this place was or did.
