Before our trip to Tokyo I was highly anticipating going to Sunshine Aquarium, as I had seen so many photos of cute little penguins inside a glass enclosure swimming above people's heads, and I thought it looked magical. However, when I arrived in Tokyo I was surprised to see that the aquarium was literally on top of a shopping mall,... More

I took my granddaughter to this small but unique aquarium on the top of a high rise building in the middle of the city. Since I had been to an amazing world class aquarium in Okinawa, I wasn't really prepared to like it. However, it was wonderful. The outside exhibits were very good: a seal show, pelican feeding, big fishes,... More

I love aqauriums - I've been to them all over the planet, but this has to rank among the very best. Not only are the interior exhibits beautiful and laid out very well, the outdoor areas are beautiful, clean, and everything has signs in English (although the shows are in Japanese). We watched a sea lion show and an otter... More

we went here and the aquariums were nice. Very pretty fish and my.kids particulary liked all the frogs. The mammal enclosures were very sad and animals looked very bored. Lots of written info but in Japanese. the names of animals/ fish/etc were in English. presentations also made in Japanese. Had a big aquarium to sit in front of. Nice if... More

Sunshine Aquarium is one of the places you definitely want to go when you just want a quiet relaxing day out. Located at the top floor of a shopping mall, the aquarium is not too small but not too big, you can most definitely finish the tour within 2 hours. Quite a lot of marine animals and reptiles to check... More

Great for children. Located in the Sunshine City Mall, so after some shopping, drop by to see some pretty amazing seals and the jellyfish. If you are in Tokyo for a short time please skip this attraction.

There are better aquariums than this one. However, the animal shows are every half hour and that almost makes the $20 adult ticket worth it. There a minimal displays/exhibits of animals. I've been to better. Located top floor of Sunshine City mall. We went on a Saturday and typical Tokyo, it was insanely crowded. Part of this is due to... More

I was honestly taken aback at what I saw and how it made me feel. We'll worth the money and take your time to be there! See a show or all of them. It's popular amongst children so pleasantly crowded. Would go again!

The ticket costs 2000 yen which worth every penny. There a huge collection of marine species around the world. The feeding show was entertaining. The seal show was fun with kids participating. There is also a coffee shop where you can rest after going around the area or waiting for the show to start.

Staying in Ikebukuro

Neighborhood Profile
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.
