Neighborhood: Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

Another Mall
Mar 2019 • Friends
It’s a skinny building which is another mall. We wondered how all these shops could survive. We only went there for lunch at the traditional Japanese noodle restaurant.

Tall Small Building
Mar 2018 • Friends
It’s a tall small building in the Ikebukuro West Entrance. While staying at Hotel Metropolitan, I usually go there to have lunch at Makabeya Restaurant.

Entrance to the Sky
Dec 2016 • Friends
This is another shopping mall in a skinny building, which is owned by Tokyo Metro. Esola is a combination of Japanese words: “E” is pronounced ‘e’ for ‘eki’ (station) in Japanese, but has the meaning of “ii” (good) when it’s pronounced the letter “E” in English. “Sola” means sky in Japanese. So Esola means an entrance to the sky.
The name “Esola” was clearly seen on the building to the right, when we came up the escalator of the Metropolitan Exit. We went there for the first time to the restaurant floor.

The building is new
Sep 2016 • Friends
The building is new but there are many shops around here so it's not always necessary to enjoy shopping here. The restaurants here are bit small but the taste is good. Worth visiting only if you need to kill time in Ikebukuro., though you cannot kill time visiting in Tokyo!!
