江戸末期から明治にかけて活躍した榊原鍵吉(さかきばらけんきち)の墓があります。65歳に亡くなるまで髷(まげ)を切らなかったというので｢最後の剣客｣と呼ばれたそうです。墓は新宿区の文化財に指定されています。

信濃町駅からは少し歩きました。真言宗大谷派のお寺で、本堂は意外と新しいですが伝統的な様式を模していてお寺だと遠目にも分かりました。訪れる人はおらずひっそりとした寺院でした。

四谷三丁目駅から、徒歩少し歩いた場所にあります。『最後の剣客』と呼ばれた榊原 鍵吉の墓があります。解説を読むと、亡くなるまで髷を解かなかったようです。

山門横に榊原鍵吉の墓についての解説がありました。
が、朝まだ早かったのが、まだ開いていませんでした。（八時ちょっと過ぎぐらいの時間でした。）鉄格子越しに本堂を眺めることは出来ました。

幕末の最後の剣客である榊原健吉の墓があるお寺です。この地にあることで、剣術で生きた男の逞しさと堅物さを感じました。この地域はお寺が多く、寺社仏閣めぐりをしました。

西応寺は戒行寺坂にあり、東隣に宗福寺、西隣に永心寺があります。
この寺には「最後の剣客」と言われた榊原鍵吉の墓があります。
榊原鍵吉は、明治維新後の武道の衰退を憂い、撃剣会を興行したり、天覧の席で兜割りを成功させるなど剣術の興隆を図ったそうです。

外苑東通りの左門町交差点から西側の路地を入った処にある。境内はあまり広くないが、本堂の周りに木々がかなりある。1607年、麹町に創建、その後現在の地に移転された。幕末随一の剣豪、榊原鍵吉の墓がある。

イロイロなお寺や神社があるパワースポット、四ッ谷の中でもとりわけ多くのお寺が集中している「戒行寺坂」の途中にあります。
立派な門です。

四ッ谷三丁目の交差点から外苑東通りをＪＲ信濃町方面へ歩き左門町を左へ曲がると住宅地の中にお寺がたくさんありました。
こちらのお寺は須賀町にありました、立派な本堂と左手には墓地が広がっていましたが、これといった見どころもありませんが、幕末から明治にかけて活躍した剣客の榊原健吉という人のお墓があります。
