My husband and I travelled through Japan for three weeks from the end of October 2019. Mostly with Patrick from Japan custom tours with the last few days in Tokyo on our own. I had heard lots of people saying how they loved Japan so my expectations where probably a bit high from the start. My communication with Patrick via email was quick and easy and I felt well informed especially when Japan was struck by a strong typhoon not long before our arrival.
Patrick greeted us at the airport as planned and we took a local train to the hotel as the express was an hour wait. After a good nights sleep we had a full day looking around Tokyo. My only regret here was that we are not interested in museums and we should have made that clearer. My husband and I could of spent more time walking the gardens rather than looking through the museum. We were also unsure where to eat dinner and only found out later, when we returned to a Tokyo, of some better eating places.
We left the next day for our Autumn leaves tour around Japan.
While we saw some lovely parks, temples, castles and popular tourist attractions my favourite experience was the ryokan. It was great to experience the more traditional food, geisha show and the onsen. While the ryokan was a little run down in areas they are working on it and I enjoyed my time there. The hotels varied from amazing to very average. The average happened due to heavy booking over a holiday weekend. The positive side of the tour was we really did see some lovely and interesting places. The downside was that we felt we spent a lot of time travelling on trains, walking to and from accommodation and looking for places to eat dinner with some variety.
Overall we saw some lovely and interesting places but I wasn’t wowed by Japan. I do think I would have liked to explore some places such as Sendai and Kanazawa a bit more. I also liked the scenery through the Japanese alps. Possibly our mistake was trying to see too many places and maybe having time to just wander through less places would have suited us more. But everyone is different and others may enjoy visiting more places. It was also recommended by others to spend more time in Tokyo which we did. Our day trip to Hakone to see Mt Fuji on a Hakone pass was fabulous. We are not bright lights and shopping people so while we visited gardens, temples, city viewing areas and a hedgehog cafe we found our extra 4 days more than enough.

Hi Katebeth67, thank you for your review and feedback. For the early autumn leaves tour, yes we did travel quite long distances to get to the areas with the best colours for the time of year. And this tour is one where we do more travelling than usual. Probably the later autumn tour could have been a better option as it covered less ground. Certainly we are looking at changing the schedule the 2020 autumn season. And I also agree that the "very average" hotel we struck was very disappointing for a first time use and we will be avoiding that chain in future.

We spent 11 days touring Japan, starting in Kyoto and working our way round to Tokyo. We ha d great time with Patrick! He is knowledgeable, engaging and organized. There were lots of laughs and some great meals together.
We visited temples, shrines, castles, museums and lots of older shopping streets. Too many great places to nail down a favorite, but our stay at the Ryokan was a bucket list item for me. The experience exceeded my expectations!
We traveled during the New Year, and Patrick made sure we could still travel efficiently and visit attractions despite the holiday.
Definitely a memorable experience. I can easily recommend Japan Custom Tours!

We had a great time travelling around Japan with Patrick and our small group of fellow travellers. Patrick was an excellent guide and showed us all sorts of interesting aspects of Japan. He went out of his way to make sure we were well looked after. Thoroughly recommend

We dealt with Patrick who is the New Zealand agent of Japanese Custom Tours. While it is not currently possible to go to Japan as a tourist, we were impressed by his knowledge of government regulations and changes upcoming on 10 June. Patrick is certainly an expert in his field and his customer service is outstanding. If I wanted to book a Japan tour I would definitely go with this company

Patrick is an excellent traveling companion: knowledgeable, helpful, adept at resolving unanticipated problems, and wry. He customized a 14-day preplanned tour to our complete satisfaction. Every place we visited was worth a visit and some places whetted our appetite for a more in-depth future trip. Some of our meals were truly fabulous. The banquets and Geisha performance at Kamesei Ryokan, the barbequed Hida beef in Takayama, and the magnificent sushi dinner at Ookini were experiences of a lifetime. Importantly, Patrick’s choices reflected a concern for value that matches ours. We did not waste money on overpriced hotels and restaurants, but we did not stay in bare-bones places and his chosen restaurants were really excellent. (Generally, Patrick’s itinerary does not include food; you pay for all meals other than breakfasts that are included in hotel charges.) Were we to redo this (our first) Japan trip, we might (we stress might) in hindsight have chosen to visit fewer places for longer; train trips consume considerable time. But, life is made of tradeoffs and we are more than satisfied with the ones Patrick chose.

Was our holiday excellent? No, it wasn’t, it was INSANELY excellent. The tour met all our expectations and much more. It was tailored to meet all demands.
Our guides, Wendy, Koji and Patrick could not be more kind, friendly, patient, helpful and knowledgeable.
Hotel accommodation was luxurious.
We have no reservations recommending the Japan Custom Tour agency.

I’ve just returned from a wonderful trip to Japan with Japan Custom Tours. Every day was packed with memorable adventures! My friend and I picked JCT for several reasons: the itinerary, the value and the quick responses to our questions about the tour. I’m so glad we chose this company.

I am still amazed at how much we saw of Japan. It was quite fun traveling by Shinkansen, bus, or taxi to get to Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara, Kanazawa, Takayama, Nagano and Tokyo. Our group of eight (six from New Zealand and us two USA Midwestern’s) became close travel companions. A bonus was watching some rugby games with the kiwis since the Rugby World Cup was taking place in Japan.

Everything went remarkably smoothly throughout the trip. The hotel accommodations were very nice and comfortable – modern, immaculate and spacious. One room even included a private tea ceremony area. Most had breakfast buffets with a delicious mix of Western and Japanese foods. You really could buy anything else you wanted nearby such as wine, clothes or souvenirs. We enjoyed dining at a variety of restaurants throughout the trip -- there was something for everyone’s food preferences.

JCT picked remarkable places to visit, each different and vibrant for Japan’s history and culture. The Peace Park and Museum in Hiroshima, the 1000 hand-carved Buddha statues (all different), the world’s largest Buddha, the gardens, the temples, shrines and Torii gates, the sacred deer ready to eat your ice cream, the snow monkeys in their family units, and the giant pandas eating bamboo were all fascinating to behold. And the Hakone Outdoor Museum’s sculptures were truly extraordinary! The other places were also interesting, but there are too many to include now.

We must credit our guide, Patrick Harnett, for designing and working so hard to make this an amazing trip! He was very personable, smart and patient with his eight travelers. He flexibly tailored the experiences to the needs and interests of our group, giving us options for places to visit. He also helped us to understand much about Japan and its lovely people. These are just words that cannot do justice to the superb time we had in Japan. It was a trip "of a lifetime!"

The first star is lost for lack of good planning and ways of communication. We trusted this company with planning our 3 week Japan vacation. We live in Florida so heat and humidity are familiar to us. The heat in Japan in August is on a different level. Despite this fact that is of course known to our guides activities and places chosen for us did not reflect a consideration for the heat. We had to ask to change the routine to allow for a mid day break as people all over Japan were dying from heat exhaustion. Planning on the sand dunes this time of the year, simply irresponsible.
Simple things that should not have happened, like accommodations in a family resort hotel that was 2.5 hours each way from our hiking destination.
Even simpler, having our family on the same floor at our hotels, possibly even adjacent rooms.. since we booked about 6 months in advance, you would think it should have been possible to accomplish?
Clearly it was since after we asked things were changed around to allow for it...
The second star lost for severe attitude issues. From the moment we complained about our Shirahama hotel, where the screaming kids and the terrible buffet breakfast truly upset us, we were treated terribly by Wendy.
She stopped greeting us, or even looking at us. She made snide comments. She removed me from her Facebook (she is the one that added me at first), she was unpleasant to the degree of hostility. I decided to just hunker down and let it blow over but boy was I mistaken. After days and days of this and just 3 days before the trip ended we got an email from Patrick reprimanding us. Unable to provide any examples he resorted to general accusations and blame.
We were shocked and very upset at the lack of professionalism. I was told Wendy did not like my personality. As a hypnotherapist and a Mindfulness teacher I recognize that I cannot change the subjective perspective of another individual. As a service provider she does not need to like her clients but should treat them in a cordial manner.
The 3 remaining stars are in part for the flexibility we were shown with changes to hotel room configuration (should have been done in advance), changes to itinerary like skipping Tottori and the sand dunes, all train tickets ready and reserved, great places we went to, museum tickets and more. Mostly these remaining 3 stars go to our Japanese guide Koji who has been delightful in every way. He had made this trip a success. Humble, knowledgable, sweet and kind. His presence was invaluable to us.

There are two sides to a story. We spent an extensive amount of time during the planning stage working with these clients to put together a custom tour that met their exacting requirements for the dates they wanted. Right from the beginning we advised that this time of year was the peak of summer telling them “July or August can both be hot” and that 2018 had “record temperatures around 40C (over 100f)”. July and August are peak periods for inbound and local tourism and it is not like the country closes down across summer. Each year people working outside in the heat or the elderly not using a/c does result in hospitalisations due to the heat, but that is not to say people sightseeing would be at heightened risk. (And we know hospitalisations and deaths from heat also occur in Florida.) Because of the heat we do have the flexibility to adjust our tours and activities where other companies would be working to a rigid schedule. We offered and suggested several times that a rest day could have been a good option, but they were set on completing everything on their list. We book accommodation in advance, and the hotels we use allocate the rooms, not us. In several places we provided a choice of accommodations and after the guests checked the options made their personal choices. The resort hotel mentioned was one of those, and of course there would be many families at the hotel (and non-resort hotels) as it is summer school holiday time in Japan. Our guests were just one of many families The personal attack on Wendy in this review is unwarranted. She did not behave in a hostile fashion to the guests and actually did their laundry for them (gratis) six times across the three weeks. She did remove the unnecessary Facebook link and then this was labelled a “hostile act”. Across the duration of this tour, I was in regular contact with Koji and Wendy, and the range of demands being made upon them required giving them advice and support. The “reprimand” mentioned was a reminder to treat our staff with respect. It did not say the guests had been disrespectful, but presumably this must be where the invention of the “general accusations and blame” originated from. My supporting my staff was criticized and labeled “one-sided” but I would not hesitate to support my staff again in a similar situation. Overall, we provided the tour that these guests requested and worked hard both before and during the trip. They did produce a string of complaints throughout the tour that were either things outside of our control (like the weather), or are subjective (such as the quality of a breakfast buffet). As these guests said to us “don’t get confused by the facts”.

We travelled with Wendy and Koji from Japan Custom Tours in June 2018 for 16 days.
Koji as our prime daytime guide was the ultimate professional, nothing was ever too much trouble and if he couldn’t answer a question then he would rush off to find out the answer or have it for you the next day. His main concern is always his client’s wellbeing and enjoyment.
Wendy and Koji as a team were friendly, caring, experienced professionals and made our trip a one of a kind specialised experience.
One of us had an injured ankle and Wendy and Koji went above and beyond their duties to ensure that the programme was changed to cater for this without missing out on seeing the sights.
They made travelling the train system easy and gave us all the information we required to confidently continue our travels for a further 5 days in Tokyo.
We also enjoyed our nights out, trying all the different types of Japanese food and of course don’t try and outdo Wendy at Karaoke.
We would highly recommend Wendy and Koji to be your escorts and guides in Japan.
Thank you Rhonda and David

My husband and I travelled with another couple for a 2 week tour of Japan organised by Patrick at Japan Custom Tours. From the outset Patricks’ responses to my questions were extremely helpful and replies very swift. We all loved the itinerary that he put together because it was so diversified and incorporated our 2 Rugby World Cup Games we had gone to see. Highlights of the trip were getting out of the large cities into the smaller cities of Takayama, Kanazawa and Nagano. We loved his insight into the different cultures and food experiences which all mounted up to an everyday adventure. Patrick made this possible without any stress by navigating us through the maze that are Japanese Train Stations and delivering us to our accommodation every night in time for a drink and ‘get together’ at the end of the day. All of our accommodation was in excellent locations and we had a variety of hotel styles. My personal favourite the Kanazawa Holiday Inn which had huge “Japanese style rooms”.
Patricks organisational skills managed us around the chaos caused by the Typhoon without any of us really noticing any major disruption. Because of the typhoon disruption in Hakone he organised a trip to the Hakone Outdoor Sculpture Park which turned out a highlight for all 8 of us.
Patrick’s personal touches went as far as delivering us to the Park for the Rugby Game in Tokyo. Another example of us enjoying the atmosphere without the stress. I’m sure my husband and I would have been close to divorce without his help and guidance and he made our first trip to Japan a memorable one.
