About Tokyo Free Guide
TOKYO FREE GUIDE, a nonprofit volunteer guiding service organization, was started in 2004 with the goal of helping overseas visitors experience Japanese culture and local customs. There are over 600 volunteer guide members who speak at least one language besides Japanese. (English, Spanish, Italian, French). Our guides are cheerful and helpful men and women, who are students, homemakers, retirees, office workers, etc. Most of them have lived and/or worked in or around Tokyo for a long time. Some of the guides may know everything about Japanese music, pop culture, anime, or the trendy shops, while others may have an extensive knowledge of Japanese food, history, culture, society, or religion. Our volunteer guides truly enjoy meeting people from different countries and cultures and sharing the fun of discovering Tokyo and its vicinity!

What an amazing introduction to Tokyo. Our delightful guide Michiko was lovely - so knowledgeable, interesting, helpful and with excellent English. We discussed with her and pre-planned our itinerary before we travelled there. She met us at our hotel and we had a fabulous day. Thank you Michiko. I hope you are well. Thank you once again.

It is so kind of you to express such nice words about your guide Michiko, and to wish her well. I will personally let her know that we have got a great message from you. Thank you again for remembering TFG in this difficult time. We are so happy to know that your day together with Michiko was well planned and ended up being fabulous. As volunteer guides, it is so rewarding for us to read your review. We too hope that you are well. When the situation stabilizes, please return to Japan and allow us to host you again. We are looking forward to it. Thank you, and please take good care of yourself.

It was our first day in Tokyo after spending 70 days in Japan. Ken contacted us and we discussed what our interests are. Ken made the plan for spending a full day with us - and what a plan. It turned out to be one of our best days in Tokyo. As we met Ken after visiting Japan for many weeks we had many questions just about ready to be asked. While we toured the city we got the replies to our many questions. We took the train, went to tourist attractions as an open air market and temples, we surveyed a supermarket very closely, went restaurant hopping and bar hopping and al in all had a perfect day with the perfect guide.

Thank you for the very positive comments regarding your tour with Ken. Spending a day with a local guide can really enhance and broaden the experience of visiting Tokyo. It seems Ken was able to provide you with answers to your questions, as well as give you some insights and background information. We are very happy that you enjoyed your time with him, and had a “perfect day with the perfect guide."

We had the most amazing day with our guide. She met us at our hotel and took us on a full day tour of Tokyo. She was very fluent in English and had a great knowledge of the history of the Shrines and Temples we saw. We are so glad that she was able to spend the day with us, because we saw so much more than we would have seen if we had gone to the sites by ourselves.

We at TFG really appreciate your nice review. It’s always a pleasure to know that our guests are able to more fully enjoy their time in Tokyo using our service. With a guide such as Masayo, a tour for a day can create memories for a lifetime. And this is true for Masayo too. Again, thank you.

This is a great way to have your own personal tour on a budget. I love how they customized it depending on our interests, and recommended the top sites. Yoshi came and picked us up from our hotel, taught us how to use the train, recommended his favorite place for lunch, and was our personal photographer for 4 hours. No catch, just buy your guide a train ticket and a meal!

Thank you for your nice comments about Yoshi and the tour you had with him. As you said, there is no "catch" to the TFG volunteer guide service. Our guests are only asked to pay for the expenses of the guide during the tour. Usually the cost of a lunch meal, transportation, and whatever entrance fees might be required. This policy allows budget travelers to have the benefit of a local's knowledge and insights, while keeping expenses at a minimum. Again, thank you, and please come back to Japan.
