The area
Neighborhood: Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.

My past 3 stays in the Southern Terrace area via the JR Shinjuku Station usually involved going out what is now known as the Koshu-Kaido Gate, or navigating an ever-changing maze of construction corridors just to get where I was going. This year, with the completion of the BUSTA Shinjuku terminal above the JR station, a whole new area has opened up that replaces the claustrophobic confines of what was once just a pedestrian tunnel. Good views of the Southern Terrace area, places to relax, and whole complex of new shops and take-out eateries to enjoy prior to departure of the Narita Express. And during my time there, there was a even a German-themed beer garden set up.
