You might not be able to travel these days, but you can still visit Japan for a few hours on a weekend evening. Maction Planet has hosted our family for two amazing trips to Japan in 2018 and 2019. The tours exceeded our every expectation and I would confidently say they were the best tours we have ever experienced. They were actually really more immersive experiences than tours. With the lockdowns of 2020 preventing leisure travel, Maction Planet has pivoted to offering online small group Japanese cooking classes. Over the past few months we have been able to join Mac for six classes o learn to make yakitori, miso ramen, udon, katsu curry (maybe our favorite?), chirashi sushi, and okonomiyaki. The classes have all been funny, educational, and produced delicious dinners. Many of the participants are repeat attendees. This is a great activity for couples or families. My review doesn't do Maction Planet or the classes justice, but I do highly recommend them to you. We can't wait to go back to Japan and travel with Maction Planet, but in the meantime we will take full advantage of these great cooking experiences. Also if you are looking for a bit of insight into the energy level and entertainment that Mac offers, you can check out his YouTube channel for dozens of great videos on all things Japan!

I’ve been out with Maction Planet previously but with global restrictions this has stunted most people’s travel plans. This is when I heard about a cooking class with Mac and a guest chef. It would be run via a webcast in a group of no more than 20 people. There were a couple of options planned over the latter part of 2020; Michelin starred Chef Koji, or Nahoko from At Home With Nahoko Cooking Classes. I chose the Nahoko class as it was Katsu Curry... I LOVE Katsu Curry. I was sent the list of ingredients (and European alternatives). This made it very easy to source as we don’t have a great selection of supermarkets nearby. On the day, once the session started it was very well set up. There were two cameras, one showing Mac and Nahoko and the other directly above the worktop and cooking hobs. This made it really easy to see what was going on. If one of us fell behind or had a question, then Mac and Nahoko would be on hand to help so no one fell behind. Throughout the session, Mac and Nahoko would be chatting away and their banter made the class really fun and brought all the other ‘classmates’ into the spirit as well. At times I almost forgot we were all scattered around the world. The time flew by quickly and by the end, it looked like everyone had managed to create an amazing dish; some for an individual, others for their whole family. To finish off, we all sat ‘together’ (over the webcast) to eat and ask any questions. On the whole, this was a fantastic way to spend a Sunday morning, cooking a really tasty lunch. I would highly recommend these classes!

If you can't get to Tokyo for the amazing food, Mac shows you how's to make it at home, with a little help from a very patient Japanese chef called Nahoko. Mac sent the list of ingredients about a week before and surprisingly most was easily available- only one order from Amazon for dashi stock! Any prep beforehand was minimal and at the allotted time you log into Zoom and away you go. As usual with Maction Planet the focus is on fun but you learn a lot along the way. Mac introduced us to the Japanese dish Katsu Curry, explaining the history behind the dish and the customs and ethos of Japanese cooking. Every step of the process was well explained and demonstrated by Nahoko and there were ample opportunities to ask daft questions along the way. And we ended up with a lovely Sunday brunch- winner winner chicken dinner!! Looking forward to doing this again...

We just attended the online Chirashi Sushi Cooking Class with Nahoko and Mac. It was absolutely fantastic. Since visiting Japan, we cook Japanese food fairly regularly, but this recipe was a new one for us. And the class was very accessible to all - whether you cook infrequently or loads; or if you are new to Japanese cuisine, or a connoisseur. Mac runs a small informal class, ensuring everyone is keeping up and encouraging questions and participation. If there are ingredients you can’t get, they have suggestions for substitutions, although all ingredients lists are already adapted for a non-Japanese audience. There was a small bit of prep before the class, but then within the class, we made food for a family of four. My children (2.5 and 5.5) loved joining in with the class - mixing and whisking and chopping carrots into flower shapes. The final dish was not only more beautiful than we would normally make for a Sunday lunch. But - even more importantly - really delicious. It took us straight back to our holiday in Japan. The recipe will be sent on, and I will definitely be making it again. And again! This was an unexpected family activity that we could all enjoy. I would really recommend this to anyone.

We hired Mac for a private tour around Tokyo. He was excellent and very charismatic. We had our 6 and 7 year old children with us as well. He did a great job explaining everything for them to understand. They really enjoyed our day out with Mac. It was such an informative, active and fun day. We really got to see and experience Tokyo with someone who has a true passion for sharing his knowledge with the world. We were very happy to see off the beat and track Tokyo. Mac took us to a tiny little whole in the wall restaurant that I’m still dreaming about. I can highly recommend Mac!
