The area
Address
Neighborhood: Shibuya / Harajuku / Ebisu
There are countless opportunities to shop in the Shibuya and Harajuku districts, especially in shops that focus on Japan's "Kawaii" culture. The trendiest areas are around Shibuya’s Center district, Harajuku's Takeshita-dori and in Omotesando. If you need to recharge from all the shopping, you can easily refresh yourself in Meiji Jingu or Sasaki Park. In contrast, Ebisu has a more grown up ambiance of calm and cool. At the Museum of Yebisu Beer you can learn about the beer that was responsible for the town’s name, and enjoy dining at the popular noodle shops in the surrounding area.

I read all the reviews on TripAdvisor and on google, and it’s real simple. This is not a bar, it’s a listening room that happens to serve alcohol. so he can pay rent. It’s not vinyl themed, retro-styled, jazz-inspired hipster get drunk hangout. It’s a place to appreciate music. Quietly.

Ask yourself:

-are you looking for a place to drink, kick back, laugh, and chat with your friends? BAR. Flirt, chat, meet people? BAR.

-are you looking for a place to listen to a carefully curated list of music on an excellent sound system? LISTENING room.

It makes total sense. This old guy has amassed an incredible collection of records. He likes to listen to them. He’ll charge you 500 yen for a drink to sit and listen to them with him. If you’re clearly not listening, he’ll turn the music off. Because you’re it’s for listening.

We came around 7:15 and were the first ones there. Ordered drinks, sat, and enjoyed the music. The owner was behind the bar, happily doing his thing. Around 8 a bunch more people came in. He turned some away. Why? They could have squeezed in - but it would have been noisy and crowded. Not ideal listening scenario. Again, not a bar. People started drunkenly talking and laughing over the music - he turned it off. Why? It’s not a bar. Overall I had a nice time, and would go back. If you are respectful and quiet, you’ll have a lovely time. If you want a jazz BAR, go somewhere else and you’ll have a lovely time there too I’m sure.

Arrived at 7pm and were the first ones sitting. Music was playing when we arrived but the owner stopped the music within a few minutes and didnt play anything again until 9:30pm. When we asked if he could play music he said "you dont need music", which if you can appreciate the experience of it, is kind of ironic and somehow made the night more interesting... despite missing out on good music (which is ofc why we came).

The owner was also not subtle about his preference for not even local, but more asian looking guests over westerners. An american-indonesian guest next to us got 3 times as much whiskey in his glass than his caucasian friend. They both had really good humour about it though and didnt let it ruin their night, but rather took it as an authentic experience in a special bar with an owner who absolutely makes his own rules.

The drinks were very well priced, 500 yen per drink, and the bar attracts an interesting mix of people all very willing to chat. definitely the type of bar you can go to alone and walk out with a few new friends. definitely go when youre looking for the night to take you on a ride.

if you would like a relaxing bar to have a perfect experience in, then this may not be the place to go. but if you want a place to meet interesting people, with an unpredictable and bold owner for a full and memorable night, then by all means go! walk in with good humour for life and you'll have a good time.

My wife and I came here the first time and were told it was full. It’s easy to assume if you’ve never been here that he’s being rude... BUT don’t be a silly ENTITLED westerner and expect everything is about you. We came back the next day at 645pm and were the first ones in. We realized that once all the seats are taken it is full. He’s not doing this for the money and not trying to cram his bar. It’s intimate and quiet for a reason! Adding too many people would ruin the vibe! You can go to other listening bars and pay an entrance fee and consume expensive drinks if you’d like, OR you can arrive here early, DONT TALK much and just listen and enjoy the experience and great music. We stayed for an hour and a half and when we left he stood at the bar entrance and thanked us bowing as we left. Observe and learn how to fit in with the locals and their way of doing things. Respect is a two way street in Japan. Do your research before visiting places in Japan, it will save you from embarrassing yourself by posting how you were mistreated when in fact it’s you are the offending one...

Went there twice back in 2015, great bar, great music and nice owner letting us play any vinyl we wanted. Such a good discovery. So this time I’m back in tokyo I wanted to go back there, but what a disappointment. The owner completely changed since last time, he is so rude and so cold, don’t even smile, doesn’t even want to work or be respectful. He kept saying “we are full” and customers couldn’t even stand and wait, and then some customers wanted to pay the bill at the end and he just screamed “PAY NOW”... why the attitude? What happened since 2015? And I was contemplating the vinyl collection, and looked at now and he screamed at me “DONT TOUCH”, like okay I get it you have rules, but again why the attitude? And also, it would nice to write them down somewhere ? No? Instead of being so rude to customers coming to enjoy the bar the vinyls and the drinks?
Anyway, don’t waste your time and don’t go there.

Review: this is a cozy bar, small space, lined with amazing vinyl. I came here to take it easy, discover some new tunes, and have a few drinks. The clientele was mostly Western when I went and a very well-known American band playing Tokyo came in. Pretty incredible! Basic drinks, nothing flashy on the bar side.

Rant: ‘the owner wasn’t nice to me, he didn’t make me feel welcome, blah blah blah.’ Boo. Hoo. You want amazing service? Go to the Four Seasons. Not everybody you come into contact with who owns an establishment in a foreign country will roll out the red carpet for you. Wherever you got this sense of entitlement, ditch it. If you think the owner cares at all what you write about him on the internet, you’re oblivious. Toughen up, don’t be such a baby.

I can’t help but feel that writing a scathing review of JBS’s lack of hospitality, only feeds the notoriety of its face but here goes...

I’m glad I visited, albeit for one drink, over the course of about 3 records. I wish I had read earlier reviews so I knew what to expect and would have been better prepared for the appalling attitude the owner had to visitors. I probably would have stayed longer.

I really loved the space, it’s simplicity and to the credit of the owner, a pretty faultless selection of records in the limited time I stayed. The sound was VERY average. The sound system lacked depth and didn’t do the strong musical selection any real justice which was a shame. Despite being rude and incredibly miserable, the owner did poor a pretty good drink.

Decided to leave earlier than planned when he yelled at a lovely couple visiting from Norway, who made the mistake of pulling a stall up to his service area of the bar. It all seemed unnecessarily humiliating.

Went to Track Bar and had a really nice evening where we were treated in a warm and inviting way, listening to music on a far superior soundsystem.

Go and enjoy JBS for what it is but go prepared for a rough time if you don’t conform.

It's funny just how much of a bars enjoyment can come from how the owner treats their patrons.

JBS has the perfect setup; great decor, intimate feel and the music is divine. But the owner/bartender will treat you like you walked in and gave him the finger. Cold and disinterested, certainly don't ask for a recommendation. Had my whisky, enjoyed the sounds, but certainly didn't stay for a second round.

Tourists be wary.

I read the warnings below about the owner before we came, but was hoping they were exaggerations. Sadly, they are dead on.

The owner was scowling at us from the moment we walked in. While ordering drinks we complimented him on his amazing vinyl collection, which he acknowledged just with a somber "Hai" and kept working.

A group of young Americans (who were behaving perfectly fine) were standing near our table. I watched one of their group go up to the bar to talk attempt to chat to the owner. He got the same cold shoulder and one-word, disinterested responses as he tried to ask the guy about his records.

Meanwhile, a lone local woman who seemed to be a regular was sitting at the bar. He was chatting normally to her, smiling and joking etc.

Seems that if you're not the type of customer he approves of - probably a regular and a jazz/blues vinyl geek - don't expect much in the way of friendliness. I guess he dislikes the fact that his place has been discovered by tourists who, heaven forbid, treat the place like "just" a bar and not some temple where we're supposed to lay down record sleeve prayer mats and worship this guy and his turntable or something ...

What a shame, as the vinyl collection is truly impressive and there is no question he has great taste.
