閑静な住宅街に佇む美術館。外観はまるで質素ながらも広大な土地を持つ邸宅のようです。 東京急行株式会社の元会長である五島慶太が、半生をかけて蒐集した古美術品が展示されており、その範囲は、陶器や茶器に限らず、日本画や中国画、写経に至るまで、連綿と歴史を紡いできた銘品がずらり。中には国宝や重要文化財もあります。 主要な展示室は2つで、他の博物館や美術館に比べると、スペース・展示数共にかなり小規模です。展示物も、ほとんどがいわゆる『誰でも知ってる有名な』ものではありません。逆にそれは他の博物館・美術館に比べ来場者も少なく、『誰でも知ってる有名な』ものだけでは推し量れない歴史の繋がりや変遷、芸術家たちのこだわりや美意識をじっくりと鑑賞できることを示していると思います。 屋外は傾斜を活かした庭園になっています。ところどころで灯籠や石碑があるものの、多くが鬱蒼とした雑木林になっています。手入れがされているため歩きやすいですが、障碍を持つ方の散策は少々難だと思います。 目と鼻の先には二子玉川があるにも関わらず、その喧騒は遠くから聞こえるように感じます。日々の喧騒をしばし忘れ、豊かな自然と芸術を静かに堪能するのに最適な場所と言えます。 The museum is located in a quiet residential area.
