口伝では1507(永正4)年の創建と伝わっている。
「新編武蔵国風土記稿」に「伊勢宮（いせのみや）」と記され、村内には当社の他に天神社・稲荷社四座の計六社が鎮座していたとされる。
明治維新後、新政府により神仏分離令が公布されたため、旧別当の経堂山福昌寺(現・経堂1-22-1)から分離した。
官国幣社以外の民社は宮号の使用が禁じられたため、1874(明治7)年に天祖神社と改称し村社に列格する。
1906(明治39)年に一町村一社を原則とした神社合祀政策が始まったことから、1908(明治41)年9月には付近の稲荷社や北野神社が合祀された。

東京都世田谷区は立錐の余地もなく住宅やマンションやアパートが建ち並びますが、そんな一角にも、昔ながらの杜に囲まれたお宮さんがありました。不思議な空間です。

小田急線の高架に近い住宅街にこんもりとした森のようになっています。他に参拝する方はいなかったので静かでした。

正月はここに来ます。静かな住宅街にある神社ですが年末年始は人がかなり来るようです。心が落ち着く感じです。

小田急線千歳船橋駅から住宅街に向かったところに、鳥の鳴き声がするうっそうとした森林の中の神社です。あまり手入れはできていない感じがしました。

住宅地にある神社で隣は公園になっています。古い神社の感じがしますが厳かな雰囲気がする神社です。静かな雰囲気ですよ、

小田急線の千歳船橋と共同の中間にある神社。
鬱蒼とした森の中にあり、私が訪れたときは人陰はなかった。
境内に社務所あり。
神楽殿もあり、元旦の０時から２時、10月第一土日の例大祭に神楽舞が奉納される。

近くにお散歩コースに便利な道があるのですがその途中にあります。
木が生い茂っていて涼しいです。

小田急線千歳船橋駅から経堂駅方面に徒歩５分位、信号の手前左側住宅地の中にあります。古くは「伊勢の宮」と言われたそうですが、天照大神の天と先祖の神様の祖を合わせて天祖神社と改称したそうです。鎮座は１５０７年と祭神名を書いた板を社殿入口横に置いていました。社殿、神楽殿、社務所等は鬱蒼とした樹木の中にあります。鎮守の森の感じで普段は静かですが、隣の児童公園では沢山の子供たちが遊んでいて賑やかでした。６月２１日夏至には夏越大祓が行われるようです。

小田急線経堂駅と千歳船橋駅のちょうど中間あたりにあります。新宿から電車に乗り経堂駅を過ぎると右手に神社の緑が見え気になっていたが、仕事が早く終わり時間ができたので、千歳船橋駅から歩いて行きました。境内は住宅街の一角にあるとは思えないほど緑に包まれた静かな空間でした。なお、天祖神社とは天照大神を主祭神とし、伊勢神宮内宮を総本社とする神社で、全国各地にあるようです。
