Mysterious space of deep green and bright red
Jun 2021
In the center of the city, where skyscrapers line the streets, there are dark green trees, bright red banners and torii gates, and countless stone statues of foxes, creating a mysterious atmosphere. The precincts of the temple are small, and it takes less than 30 minutes to walk around. Even so, the temple attracts visitors as if they are drawn to it (of course, there are many tourists from overseas). The Aoyama-dori Avenue in front of the temple is crowded with cars, especially on weekdays, so the hustle and bustle of the city center is not completely blocked out, but even so, once you enter the temple grounds, you will feel naturally calmer. The precincts are dotted with small shrines, and there are few explanatory notes for them, but it might be a good idea to just stroll around as you feel, without daring to refer to any such information.

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Akasaka / Roppongi
Not so long ago the Akasaka and Roppongi areas were famous for their nightlife, high-class restaurants, bars and clubs. More recently, with the opening of Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown and Akasaka Sacas, the area has declared itself as the most fashionable spot to be seen. The area also hosts the National Art Center and the Mori Art Museum and lots of trendy art galleries.

One of the unique temple which is also a hybrid with a shrine where you can find variety of bits and pieces of the Japanese religion how they have founded and how they have evolved to be blended into the culture and not been obvious to find in current ordinary Japanese who mostly consider they do not have any religion. (Cannot explain without hard studying)
There are quit a few shrines and temple you may have visited all around Japan but this is one of the must to go (with a specialist if possible) in Tokyo.

Dropped by here after nail salon. Small shrine but cozy. They have tiny waterfall and you can "wash" your own coin to make a wish become $$.
The thing I love the most is not the amulet but the way they show.

The headquarters is located in Toyokawa and this shrine is a brunch in Tokyo.

Quietly standing in the middle of Tokyo I have not known until I just passed by. This traditional shrine is worthwhile visiting for calming down or just enjoying spiritual atmosphere.

Just a stone away from Akasaka Mitsuke Subway Station.

Visit in conjunction with Hie shrine. Small but a lot crammed in and popular with locals who were praying there. Statues of foxes everywhere with red scarves round their necks. Really nice shrine to visit but unless you are nearby or have a burning desire to visit small shrines then both this and Hie Shrine are probably not worth a massive detour if your time in Tokyo is tight.

I visited her in September, 2017. You should visit here in the afternoon or at night. There are beautiful lanterns around the shrine. It was amazing and beautiful.

This small but authentic bit of Japanese culture was a pleasant surprise. Located just across the street from Hotel Monterey Akasaka it is known as the shrine for the inari and also the goddess of "flow" - artistic flow, and is frequented by entertainers.

Red and Orange blooming trees drape over this long passage way to get to the Temple. The path way was flooded with people, shopping, eating and stopping us to take pictures of a small blonde haired blue eyed baby that was with us. I really felt like I got the experience of Urban Tokyo. It was so clean.

This shrine and temple isn't signposted in English anywhere but it is obvious from the road, that it's a large temple in the middle of a very busy area.
Personally I found this temple to be quite dark and cramped, which is unlike any of the other temples I've seen in Tokyo. Whereas others are spacious, light and bright, I found the area surrounding the temple to be quite dark and claustropbic. This was mainly due to the numerous dark stone statues all round the walkways and the overhanging trees.
It's peaceful, like all temples however it's not one I'd rush back to.
