Oji Shrine

Oji Shrine, Kita

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Akabane / Itabashi
In Akabane and Itabashi, visitors can get a glimpse of the ordinary day-to-day life of Tokyo. On the east side of Akabane station, there are many traditional shopping districts and small izakayas, while on the west side, there’s a modern shopping mall. Itabashi is currently being developed as a residential area with a huge 1.1km long shopping street that extends from east to west. Rows of shops and izakayas target the down to earth everyday needs of locals. Both Akabane and Itabashi are notable for their easy access to the city center as well as their proximity to Ikebukuro.

Small but a steady stream of visitors ringing the bell. There was an amazing golden shrine on display behind glass. A nice, peaceful area for a few minutes.

The original Shinto Shrine is believed to have been built here around 1321 although the original was destroyed in WW2. The building that exists today was started in the 1950's.It is an interesting shrine that sits on top of the hill just adjacent to the Oji Station and to get to it walk along the creek in the Otanashi Shinsui Park and then up the hill. Look for the 600 year old Ginko tree in the grounds.

Visited this shrine with my husband as we explored Kita for the day. It is a bit out of the way. We definitely got some strange looks and were relieved to leave. Definitely recommend Meiji shrine or larger ones for a spiritual visit.
