Neighborhood: Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.

This is a great shop for artists as it has a huge supply of tools, paints, inks, papers and other things for artists. You could spend a very long time here looking. This is a serious shop, not a craft store.

This shop was right next to my hotel in Tokyo (Fresa Inn Jinbocho/Jimbocho) and was an amazing find. They have a ton of great stuff: I ended up getting stationery, lapel pins, and a T-shirt, all cat-related! If you are an animal lover (or a lover of adorable items) you should definitely stop by. Several items are very unique and would make great gifts or souvenirs. But best of all it is in a very relaxed neighborhood and is therefore completely non-touristy and low pressure. Prices are perhaps on the high side but the selection and quality are top-notch.
