Neighborhood: Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.

I participated in the 2023 Kanda Festival.
The parishioners are from Nihonbashi to Akihabara, so there were many participants.
It's hard to walk around with children, but there's no other festival this large in the center of Tokyo, so I recommend you participate.
I think there's a way to participate.

I visited the limited-time 'Yokai Exhibition.' I was able to enjoy valuable Edo-period woodblock prints housed in the shrine’s museum. It’s within walking distance from Akihabara, but the shrine grounds offer a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. There’s also a café where you can take a break.

There was a long queue in front of the shrine despite being the first weekday of the year. The street in front of the shrine was cordoned off to let visitors queue in front of the shrine entrance. Despite the seemingly long queue, I only waited 5 minutes to get in. It was the main shrine building (honden) that took much longer to visit. It took another 20 minutes or so to get to the honden to offer a New Year's wish for good luck.
The shrine has its roots back in 730 AD. It is also known to enshrine a samurai who attempted to overthrow the government back in 940 AD. He is said to bring misfortune to the locals if the shrine was not properly maintained. Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu once visited the shrine before participating in the Battle of Sekigahara, which resulted in his victory and the subsequent unification of Japan.
It's not so far from Asakusa Temple and located right near Akihabara, meaning that both tourist spots can be seen on the same day. Absolutely recommended if you're visiting Tokyo.

The shrine is famous for being visited by many business representatives at the beginning of the year to pray for business prosperity. The shrine is so crowded during the year-end and New Year's holidays and the Kanda Festival that visitors are unable to move, but even on weekdays when no such events are held, the shrine is never without people.
The Zuishimon gate and shrine pavilions, with their bright vermilion pillars and beams, are eye-catching, but the precincts themselves are not very large, and it takes only about 30 minutes to walk around the shrine. At the store, there are amulets and talismans for warding off bad luck and family safety, which can be found at other shrines, but in particular, there are many charms and rakes for prosperous business, which many visitors purchase for their own business.
The east side of the shrine used to be a cliff from which one could enjoy the view of Sumida, but nowadays, high-rise buildings line the street and the view cannot be enjoyed. However, there are many guides and other information on the shrine precincts and outside the shrine that tell the story of how Edo used to be, so it may be a good idea to read them while thinking about the scenery of that time.

I made my annual visit to Kanda Myojin Shrine in 2024.
As expected, there are many groups of businessmen there, as it is the god of business. The atmosphere of Kanda Myojin Shrine during the New Year is unique to this time of year. I hope this year will be a good one!

The Kanda Myojin Shrine is an ancient sanctuary in Tokyo, where you can ask for good luck, prosperity and marriage. Like many Shintoist shrines it has its "Temisu", as it is like a pond or water fountain, where with a wooden ladle, hands and mouth are washed to "purify" before entering the temple.
We spend most of the time in the Hall, which is a hall built inside the temple grounds, a modern structure that contrasts with the oldness of the place. Upstairs in his living room, we stayed inside for the international competition of karaoke for which we had came to Tokyo this year(Karaoke World Championships), but we still enjoyed the sight of the surrounding structures: a temple beauty in red, green and gold.
In the Kanda Myojin Shrine Hall we could also enjoy the restaurant with Japanese food from the ground floor, and we saw many curiosities and souvenirs to buy.
Like all temples, the place has a kind of large patio, where they told us several festivals are famous throughout the year.

This shrine has a long history, built 730 A.D.
It played an important role in era Edo, had been decided as a guardian shrine of a castle Edo cause it located north-east direction from the castle. (In the philosophy of Yin and Yan, this direction is called Kimon and it is believed to be a door for the spirits and devil.)
Today it is modernized, they are selling a wide range of a ‘Kawaii’ charm designed with a variety of characters from animation.
The building is colored red and decorated with fabric. Fabric flapped in the wind is a beautiful sight.
It is a host of the god of the business and the god of matchmaking, therewith it is always crowded.

The Kanda Myojin Shrine has the long tradition as the protector Shrine for downtown Tokyo and was given special status by Shogun. It is still worshiped by Tokyo resident and business widely. The souvenir shop sells many interesting Japanese merchandise related to or blessed by Kanda Myojin priests and also a good place for a quick rest. Traditional Japanese shrine is next to Akihabara district, famous for latest electronic gadgets, games, anime and other soft culture. Great place to visit to fee old Tokyo, just nest to the latest.

KANDA MYOJIN
Kanda Myojin is a 1300-year-old shrine located in Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.
The deities are enshrined at lchinomiya, Daikoku-sama (matchmaking), Ninomiya, Ebisu-sama (prosperous business), Sannomiya, and Taira no Masakado(game luck).
Because it is close to the business district of Tokyo, it is a shrine that is crowded with many business people and many worshipers to benefit.

Just minutes from busy Akihabara Kanda Myojin is an oasis of traditional culture most instructive to Western visitors. It was a delight to watch formally dressed families on a recent warm November sunny morning. The main Shinto Shrine, the main gate Zuishin-mon and numerous ancilliary buildings on a small hill form this island of tranquility. Kanda Myojin is one of my fovourite spots in Tokyo/Akihabara.
