Neighborhood: Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.

    Relaxed and enjoyable class.
We fully enjoyed our class. It was well organized and easy to follow for a 12-year-old and an adult. We particularly appreciated the demonstration of what to do in addition to verbal description. The result was delicious and we appreciated the attention to detail around dietary requirements.

Must do if you love food
This is a must do in Tokyo. Ayuko is very friendly and patient and her English is amazing. The class was informative and practical. It’s well worth the money so do book on. The food was also very delicious to eat and the eat and I made a big bento box too. Great workshop.

Vegetarians accommodated cooking class - gyoza and okonomyaki
This was such an amazing and lovely experience! Welcomed into a cute little home, hosted by such a kind couple. It was not easy to find a cooking class that would accommodate one vegetarian and one meat-eater, but Ayuko and Shugo did it with ease!! We made okonomyaki and gyoza, drank sake, learnt about Japan, swapped stories, and brought home leftovers for supper that night as well.

    Perfect Experience
Ayuko and Shugo are a great team in the kitchen! They have a good setup in their home and quickly got us slicing and dicing. Their instructions were clear and while they demonstrated techniques, we were hands-on for the preparation and cooking. They speak very good English, and the class was very well-organized. They have a very pleasant deck where we were able to enjoy everything we made with beer and sake. Highly recommend their cooking classes.

Meaningful Learning Experience for Those Interested in Sushi
I had the best experience learning how to cut a whole fish and make sushi (nigri and maki). Ayuko and Shugo put together a wonderful learning environment for teaching at their home. They were patient with explaining and showing our group the different steps for cutting a whole fish to shaping nigri sushi. After we learned how to cut/fillet a whole fish, Shugo demonstrated how to de-skin and cut other types of fish fillets. The quality of the ingredients was very very good and made for very good sushi. To top off the event, they shared a PDF of Ayuko cookbook 'Teaching Japanese Cooking in English' (some of the recipes we went over are found in this book). I can't recommend Buddha Bellies Cooking School enough. It was one of the major highlights when visiting Japan

    Amazing experience!! Highly recommend
Had an excellent time at the cooking class at Buddha Bellies with myself and two family members. The chef's were so kind to create a vegan menu to accommodate our dietary restrictions, and the food was absolutely wonderful. The environment was relaxed and fun, and our chef's left us with food to take on our train ride to the next city. They were so hospitable and helped us get a taxi to our next destination. Cannot recommend this enough!!!

    A taste of Japan!
As part of a visit to Tokyo with my two sons, we decided to try making sushi and found Buddha Bellies online. We were warmly received by Ayuko and Shugo and had a great time in their home, learning both how to make maki and nigiri, as well as getting some of the historical and cultural context around this food and its place in Japanese society. It was also a possibility to get a glimpse behind the facade of a Tokyo home and meet a family with all their warmth and hospitality. In the end we naturally also were able to enjoy the fruits of our labour, accompanied by our drinks of choice. I would definitely recommend this to anyone!

Went there for Valentine's Day evening with my girlfriend, was a great experience! Ayuko was so nice, came for us at the metro station, showed us around the neighbourhood and always made us feel at ease during the lesson. She also speaks a flawless English! I strongly recommend!

My husband and I took this class on our honeymoon. This experience was honestly a highlight of our time in Tokyo!! It was so fun to get to learn how to make the sushi and the meal was delicious! Chef Shugo and Ayuko were so friendly, kind and incredible hosts. They really took the experience to another level! We highly recommend Buddha Bellies to anyone visiting Tokyo. Overall the class was fun, informative and most importantly delicious!

I also want to mention that my husband and I have severe allergies and food restrictions and they were SO accommodating.

Ayuko was very efficient and explained each step of the recipes with me, and answered all my questions. I received all the recipes by email the following day, to try at home.
The class was one-on-one and I was lucky to have Ayuko to myself! Directions to arrive were very simple and Ayuko's husband was waiting at the station. They also gave me good advice on visits to do in Tokyo.

Tokyo can be difficult to navigate with a large group, it required a lot of planning ahead for us to find restaurants that could seat our group of 8 friends and even then we often had long waits or got turned away. Also, you get tired of constantly eating out at restaurants on vacation!

Buddha Bellies Cooking School was like a breath of fresh air for our group. This activity got us out of the tourist-y areas and into an authentic Japanese home. It was a short walk from the metro stop to their lovely home and we were already commenting on the nice change of pace being in this quiet and peaceful neighborhood. Shugo and Ayuko were very welcoming and made us feel at home in their kitchen. We did a sushi making class but I imagine any of their classes would be amazing to do and result in a yummy meal! One of the highlights for us was also getting to meet their sweet dog Joy on our way out. Ayuko sent us a PDF of her recipe book and we can't wait to try making more delicious food at home.

This class is amazing! It was one of our highlights during our time in Japan and we continually reminisce on the memories! You are provided with all the tools and VERY tasty ingredients (very fresh and high quality), along with over 40 years of experience between the two Chefs! They are both extremely welcoming and respectful. They shared their knowledge and insight into the cuisine world of Sushi! I HIGHLY recommend this experience while you are in Tokyo, it will be unforgettable!

If you are looking for excellent food, superior service, and an authentic experience in Japan, you must take a cooking class with Buddha Bellies. Ayuko met the four members of our class at the train station. The directions were clear and she was easy to spot in her Buddha Bellies apron. She and her husband, Shugo, opened their beautiful home and kitchen to us. You are greeted with tea and a fetching apron. Ayuko gave us a brief history about the food and culture of Tokyo. And then, time to cook. I am a decent home cook with no experience in Japanese cuisine. Shugo had me preparing restaurant-quality nigiri by the end of our class. We raised our glasses of beer, home-made plum wine, and sake, and enjoyed a lovely lunch. Not only would I highly recommend this class, I would return for a different class. Thank you, Ayuko and Shugo.
