Address
Neighborhood: Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.

We had the best time doing this class! Ayuko is an experienced sushi chef who helped us make the most amazing sushi. We especially appreciated her time to explain Japanese knives and culture. If you’re looking to gain some great Japanese cooking skills, have fun, and eat some amazing restaurant quality food- this is the class for you!

Ayuko was very efficient and explained each step of the recipes with me, and answered all my questions. I received all the recipes by email the following day, to try at home.
The class was one-on-one and I was lucky to have Ayuko to myself! Directions to arrive were very simple and Ayuko's husband was waiting at the station. They also gave me good advice on visits to do in Tokyo.

If you are looking for excellent food, superior service, and an authentic experience in Japan, you must take a cooking class with Buddha Bellies. Ayuko met the four members of our class at the train station. The directions were clear and she was easy to spot in her Buddha Bellies apron. She and her husband, Shugo, opened their beautiful home and kitchen to us. You are greeted with tea and a fetching apron. Ayuko gave us a brief history about the food and culture of Tokyo. And then, time to cook. I am a decent home cook with no experience in Japanese cuisine. Shugo had me preparing restaurant-quality nigiri by the end of our class. We raised our glasses of beer, home-made plum wine, and sake, and enjoyed a lovely lunch. Not only would I highly recommend this class, I would return for a different class. Thank you, Ayuko and Shugo.

Our family had a wonderful experience at Buddha Bellies cooking school. Ayuko and her husband were kind, patient and very easy to work with. Instruction was comprehensive and easy to follow. The food was delicious. They were able to accommodate our four children (ages 8 - 13) and our vegetarian diet. We learned a bit about the culture and how to prepare simple meals at home. We hope to take another class again.

Excellent, friendly & fun experience!! That’s basically the evening in a nutshell. Ayuko met me on time at the meeting point close to the cooking school and we chatted in English on the way to the premises. There’s a spacious area in the apartment to watch/prepare & cook. She makes everything look so easy and steps in to help whenever you need it. I did the okonomoyaki & gyoza course and WOW!! They were legitimately the best tasting ones I have ever had. You can never go back to frozen/mass produced gyozas ever again haha. The okonomoyaki looked and tasted Oishī (delicious) and with some final finishing touches, looked like it belonged on the cover of a magazine (if there wasn’t some amateur like me taking the photo that is). Highly recommend this course!!

Ayuko and her husband were fantastic hosts! It was such a special treat to cook in their home. The Japanese pancake and gyoza I cooked were not only delicious, but something I could replicate at home. Bring an appetite to this event, you’ll love it!

I really enjoyed the Washoku course (Japanese traditional style cooking). We learned to make an appetizer vegetable dish, egg roll (tamagoyaki), miso soup (from scratch!) and teriyaki chicken/ tuna (I opted for tuna) -- it was a complete meal! Ayuko and Shugo were patient teachers and guided us through the step-by-step process. They also shared tips on how to re-create dishes back at our home country (e.g. substitute ingredients and cookware). All in all, I highly recommend the cooking class!

We did the sushi making class and it was simply fantastic. Ayuko is unbelievably skilled and knowledgable. We had the best time learning from her and hearing her experiences. The sushi we made was incredible too - really fresh and tasty ingredients plus Ayuko was the perfect hostess and the finishing touches made for a perfect evening in Tokyo.

I love Japanese food so on my first trip to Japan I decided to take a cooking class. I enjoyed it so much that I also did a second one! Ayuko is a great teacher who is very patient and an expert chef. The class sizes were small and it was an opportunity to make new friends from all around the world :)
My first class was on making a bento box which was so impressive and delicious. The second class was on decorative sushi. I couldnt believe how well they turned out!
The class is really easy to find and get to on the subway. I definitely plan to take another class next time I'm in Tokyo!
