We traveled from Tokyo to Kanazava and the trip was quick and efficient. The price is quite steep however. Make sure you know what station your train leave from (Tokyo has more than one) and be there with some time margin as the stations are...More

Caught the train from Tokyo to Kyoto, just an amazing experience, on time , clean and efficient, not like the UK rail service. Great view of Mount Fuji as well.

The best way to see Japan. We ordered our Japan rail pass from the US. It was mailed to us and we had it on us when we landed in Japan. You need to convert the paper passes to actual rail passes once you land...More

Several things I’ve learned: 1. Go to the ticket machine — there would be JR Railway staff who will assist you in booking your tickets (its easiest when you have cash in hand, or your credit card pin is active). 2. Make sure which train...More

I rode the Shinkansen and loved the smooth ride. Our seats were reserved! It reminded me of Amtrak in NY but was much quieter, smoother and comfortable.

I have been in Tokyo and traveled with the amazingly fast and clean Shinkansen train, when I went to Kyoto. These trains are the best way to travel when one is going to many different cities in Japan. They are always on time, very clean...More

Easy to follow signs will get you to your platform. The staff at JR are friendly, a bit overwhelmed with tourists, but helpful. Be punctual the trains leave on time. Ok to bring your own food, but keep the trains clean. Japan has a lack...More

Get the JR Pass BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR JAPAN. Must be bought online before arrival and allows for almost limitless travel on the Shinkansen trains (check to make sure that your entire route is covered by the pass). Get an Bento box and a beer...More

Best is to buy the ticket at Kyoto station. Thex are in english, you can book your seat, the trains leave about every 15 minutes. No need to book in advance or online.
Hi, my family and I (4 adults & 2 toddlers) will need to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto on Jan 3rd, 2019. Planning to get a 7-day JR pass for the trip since we will be traveling between cities. I read that New Year holidays is busy season and probably difficult to reserve 6 seats on the bullet train. Unfortunately, we won't arrive at Japan until Jan 1st so we can't really make reservations ahead of time (I read we can only exchange for the JR pass and make reservations at the local exchange/ticket office). While I don't really care for having more leg room and a better seat, I am wondering if getting the JR Green Pass will increase my chances of getting a reservation when we arrive. I have read Green Pass is less flexible where you can't use it for the unreserved cars? But I assume Green Pass will let me reserve in both Green/Regular cars? Any other suggestions? Thanks

Hi there! Firstly, will your Tokyo-Kyoto journey be a round trip? If so, then the JR Pass becomes economical. The seats in Ordinary Class are pretty good; certainly better than Economy on airplanes. So you're really not... More
