Neighborhood: Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.

This street hits the right note

As a guitarist, this was a must visit on my recent trip to Tokyo. I was not disappointed at all. I enjoyed the many shops featuring high end to Japanese guitars. I only wished I had more time visiting all the shops. The street is really close to the subway for access.

Some of the shops felt as if I was in a museum. Every level of player would enjoy Guitar Street, whether your preference was electric or acoustic guitar.

Tokyo's famous Guitar street
Mar 2018 • Solo
This is one of my favourite places to visit in Tokyo. The place reminds me of Denmark Street in London where nearly all the stores are selling guitars, except this place is huge and the stores are often over several floors.

The stores sell both new and secondhand and mostly electric guitars, although there are also stores specializing in acoustic guitars and others that sell violins, violas and cellos and others that sell brass instruments, but the majority are selling both secondhand and new electric guitars.

Brands such as Gibson, Epiphone, Ibanez, Martin, PRS, ESP, Fender, Guild, Saijo, Fernandez, Yamaha, Xotic and so many other brands can be found here. You can find vintage Gibson Les Pauls and original vintage Stratocasters as well as Yamaha SG1000, 2000 and 3000 models. The place is truly amazing.

This trip was the second time I have bought a guitar here, and this time I bought a vintage small body electric for my son.

The stores open at different times, some at 10am and some at 10.30am or 11am, so don't come too early. The staff are always friendly and helpful in these stores and the prices reasonable. This place is a must for musicians visiting Japan.
