The area
Neighborhood: Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

This sweet spot is a bit off the beaten track and reached by the only trolley system left in Tokyo but it is well worth the trip. Admission is very reasonable and the grounds are beautifully landscaped so you can enjoy both the interior art on display and the exterior.
If you are really lucky you will be treated to a glimpse of the roly-poly striped cat that frequents the lawn.
The museum is broken into 4 galleries with several different kinds of work on display:
Wall hanging scrolls, floor standing panels and small paintings around the 12 months
of the year theme. Most of these were produced in the 1920's, titles are provided in English. The standouts for us were the bird and floral works but there is something for anyone who appreciates beauty and creativity.
