Momo was a very attentive tour guide to Fabric Town in Tokyo. She took the time to explain the history prior to the walking tour. As we shopped for fabric she provided a guide to assist with conversion.

The shops open at 11. Most shops have limited cotton quilting material. Most of the fabric was like a JoAnns clearance bin. I was excited to go but didn't find anything I would want to carry home. I must say I didn't visit all the floors at Tomato's

My wife was looking for quilting fabric and found a treasure trove in Nippori Fabric Town. Take the JR Yamanote train line to Nippori Station, then go out the south end of the station and head downhill until you see signs in English on the sidewalk and beside the road for "Fabric Town". If you do a web search for this place you will find links to download a map which is essential. Merchants also have the maps if you can snag one of the paper versions. We found fantastic fabric on the 4th floor of the Tomato Main Store. The place is always hopping, but don't be daunted. The queue for cutting and paying moves quickly and the staff has a good command of English undoubtedly from their large number of international customers. My wife also found beautiful fabric bargains at the Mihama Cloth and Doumoto Shouten shops, and the shopkeepers are very welcoming of tourists. For the serious fabric shopper, consider taking a small empty wheeled suitcase to fill as you purchase. Makes for an easy return back to the hotel and onward travel with kilos of fabric. For a bite to eat there are several restaurants at the beginning of the street near the train station. A great outing for anyone with an interest in Japanese fabric at excellent prices. Don't be daunted by the challenge of using the train and metro in Tokyo. Signs are in English, and the biggest challenge of knowing the correct fare is easily solved using the rail and metro trip planners on-line before you set out. Enter your first and last stations and the planners will tell you the price of the ticket to purchase at the easy-to-use machines (touch the "Language" or "English" button in the upper right hand corner of the screen) in the stations.

Working as a professional costume designer, I can recommend anyone interested in fabrics to visit here. I spent the afternoon walking up and down the textile town street, visiting both fabric-shops, haberdashery and leather-shops. The quality of the fabrics was higher than I expected, especially in linen. There was less silk than I would have liked, but the versatile stock made up for it. Also I have to salute the style, or rather, the range of styles. I can imaging it´s heaven for quilters and "Fuit"-fans. Take time to go all the way to the end of the street, there are some treasures there!

It was fairly easy to get to as there are signs within the train station. I went on my own leaving my husband to visit a different part of Japan. It was safe and quiet which made it easy to peruse all the fabrics. There were stores for each kind of fabrics including leather and purse making hardware. I was mainly interested in quilting cotton, there were liberty, Asian style, Hawaiian, kids, loads of canvas for bags. The biggest store is the Tomato store which has 3-4 stores, one was a craft one which had sashiko supplies. There are at least 3 stores that sell precuts but these are half, 1 or 2 metre lengths. Their fat quarters are 33 x 55. The stores are on both sides of the street, whisked there were more cafe places as fabric is heavy and should have brought a rug sack! Oh and bring cash, aside from Tomato, no one else takes credit cards.

This was my third trip to Nippori Town, I love it It's easy to find once you get off the train at Nippori on the Yamonte Line. Take the east exit. Be prepared. Decide what you want to buy and look for it. I didn't find the natural fabrics that much cheaper than Australia. I left the family and went solo. If you have been in Tokyo for a few days you would have gotten used to the crowds. I bought quite a bit of Clover products. There are some great cheap leather shops too where you can buy all you need to create leather goods. Tomato is always great but it does get crowded and you can get stuck in the corner like I did and it's hard to get out. Also be aware there are two lines at the cashier, one for buying pre cut fabric and one for get the fabric measured. DO NOT GET IN THE WRONG LINE! Try to go early and when you are not tired because it takes a lot of energy to fight through the other crafters. Make sure that you pay for extra luggage home as fabric can be very heavy, I discovered that. Have fun and buy up big!

Great place when you talk about fabrics. We went there twice, imagine that.
Close vicinity from where we stay so we actually walk home after TOMATO.
Will definitely come again if we ever happen to visit Tokyo again

If you are a fabriholic and happen to be in Tokyo it’s not to be missed. Easy to get to by train on the JR Yamanote line which runs through Tokyo and Shinjuku stations. Compared to the range and prices we have in Australia it’s amazing. There are a couple of fabulous businesses that stand out for me - Tomato - 5 floors of fabric and each one dedicated to a type of fabric, Tsukiyasu run by an elderly Japanese woman and her grandson lots of beautiful Japanese fabrics and panels, and a second hand Kimono shop Tansuya worthy of a look even if you don’t buy anything. They have a ¥1000 rack I couldn’t resist, I purchased 3 beautiful Kimono. I had to keep in mind luggage restrictions so I was VERY restrained. I had my idea of a great time, don’t miss it.

This whole street has at least 70 fabric shops. Cash is a must have as credit cards are not used here. Maps are available from the stores listing what type of fabrics each shop stocks. This area is easily reached by train. Go to NIPPORI Station. If you `overshop', a Post Office is marked on the map and is near the Bus Station. Well worth considering if you don't want to carry purchases for the rest of your travels. Be prepared to find everything from average fabrics to the most amazing, available nowhere else type.

For my wife and her friend this was probably one of the highlights of our visit to Japan. They had a great time checking out the many shops and the wide range of fabrics available. They certainly bought some fabric but the prices were not dissimilar from those in Australia. However they loved the experience. By the way apparently not all the shops accept credit cards.
My friend and I were lucky to find a nice coffee shop just around the corner !

My aunt gave me a small piece of sample fabric for me to buy. The thing is i have no clue about fabric and their texture. Will the shop owners be willing to help me get the right fabric just by showing the sample?

Virtually no English is spoken. If the fabric was bought in Nippori maybe they can help, but I am doubtful. They might be able to steer you towards something similar.

Did anyone use their credit cards for purchases (e.g. in Tomato or Mihama cloth) or cash only? Visiting in 4 weeks time. Many thanks.

Most shops open 10:00 to 18:00 hrs. We arrived shortly after 10:00 hrs and everything was open. Closed Sundays, although we recall there might be some stores closed on Thursdays.
