NOT SAFE
Sep 2016 • Couples
This was one of the things, I was hoping to see. One of rare things that is clearly signed, but it's forgoten from the world. Steps are narrow, used, all covered in high grass, safety fence is missing and a very steep rocky hill is allowing you to se the river gorge down below. So we only got half way down the stairs. When there was no more fence we turned around. It just did not look safe.

Supposed meeting place of Communist conspirators, not really "caves" per se, but a nice place to stretch your legs.

We were driving through Stepanavan on the way to Lori Berd and we were intrigued by the sign on the east end of Stephanavan reading "Communist Caves." The sign, along the M3, is old and peeling and appears to have been there since the Soviet era or maybe just immediately after. A short drive down a side road, past a government building, will bring you to a circular parking area. In the center of the parking area is a statue (pictured). On the east side of the parking area is a pathway and staircase heading down into the gorge. Follow this pathway for about 100 meters and you will find the so-called Communist Caves. These are caves that are rumored to have been hiding and meeting places for communist conspirators. The caves are not more than 3 or 4 meters deep and you cannot actually go into the caves. Rather, if anyone had ever actually met here, it would have been on the edge of the gorge, not actually in the caves. The hike down is nice and the gorge is pretty (as pretty as it can be for Armenia, in other words, you will see trash, pollution, electricity wires, and piping infrastructure). If you need a quick place to stretch your legs, then stop here for 25 minutes. Otherwise, continue to Lori Berd.
