The ruins of 17th century Palace functioning as a castle. The biggest palace in Europe in that time. Offering 5 different routs and a number of seasonal events and attractions. An online application helps to learn about the places we see.
The place contains also a souvenir shop, a restaurant and a conference center.

Our group tour of GaliciaPoland and Ukraine stopped at many places off the usual tourist spots. Great if you had been to Poland previously and already seen the main sites. Castle is in ruins, but enough to see to occupy an hour or more. If in this part of Southern Poland, take the time for a detour. You might be glad that you did.

The castle is now in a stage of being the permanent and secured ruin. It is great to walk and search around, find secretive short cuts or dead-ends. Must see all the levels (3).
Additional to the great views and amazing passages, there is a "mysterious" history of the castle. It was said on internet, that the original owner ~ Krzysztof Ossoliński was experimenting with black magic, and the castle was built to strange standards. For example the number of windows in the castle suppose to match the number of days in one year (365), there are 52 rooms (as the numbers of weeks per year), and 12 ballrooms matching a number of months. we didn't have a time to check all this.
The name of the castle is also mysteriously strange. Krzyż = crucifix/cross, topór = axe, so Krzyżtopór is Crucifix-axe!
With this mystical atmosphere, and amazing ruins, the castle is a must to see.

It's in the middle of nowhere but worth a short detour if you are in the area. zl 10 entry fee and free parking. Take the audio tour otherwise you will end up retracing your steps or going down dead ends. The floor is very uneven in lots of places so watch your footing.

A little neglected castle, which is slowly being lifted from the ruins. The most magnificent castle ruins I have ever seen. I've been there a few years ago when castle wasn't in such a "good shape" as it is nowadays. You can walk around there for a few hours and you don't feel like being tired. This place looks just awesome.

Amazing. Must see before they will find investors who convert it to hotel.
This place stimulates imagination of kids and adults. Feels a history.

We went to visit the place last summer. We have reviewed it before but TA knows our experience better than we do so they haven't posted.
Rude lady at the gate told us that we can't pay with card and we have to go to the cash machine to the town few kilometres away from the castle. Locals and friends of staff seem to be going in for free. Number of people with kids went past us while we were trying to find the solution with the lady at the gate for entering the castle grounds. It seemed to us that as long as they know you saying "cześć " is enough to enter for free. After a trip to Iwaniska for some cash we've been let in.
The castles signage is awful. You seem to be walking around thru the same places over and over again. No common sense or any order with zone signs. Anyway. We have seen lot more nicer places in Poland. Św. Krzyż is close enough to spend some time there instead. Sandomierz old town is also very nice. Next time I will stick to Kraków Tatry and Bieszczady. Jezioro białe. We love Poland despite that experience. Spare your time for other places instead.

Great castle to visit - especially when the weather is nice. Look for special events there. A lot of shows and activities for the whole family. Couples like to make their photo-sessions there since it's quite romantic ;)
It's a really nice touch of a history saved in this cold walls :D I recommend to see it!

Totally worth of coming and seeing! It is amazing and unexpected. The only thing is that the place is crowded but being there it is so understandable.
I would wish myself more places like that in Poland.

Almost a two hour drive by car from Tarnów through lovely small villages and towns, the ruins are just suddenly there. It is hard to imagine the one grandeur of this huge place. Would have liked to have seen a brochure describing the castle history and layout in more detail as there was no information posted once you were inside.

Is there any way getting to Krzyżtopór castle from Krakow using public transport?

You can check the connection at:
rozklady.mda.malopolska.pl/?lang=eng
looking for Iwaniska as a bus stop.
The ride takes quite a long time - about 3 hours in one way.
From Iwaniska you can go by foot 3,5 km or cath the local bus to Ujazd Zamek.
