About
The museum was completely renewed in 2019/2020. The monumental Hartenstein Villa was the headquarters of the British Airborne Division during the Battle of Arnhem (1944). Here, the stories of British, Polish and German soldiers come to life. Civilians also play an important role. Come and see our collection of authentic weaponry, documents, footage and photographs. The new multilingual audio tour provides 50 exhibits with personal background stories. Historian and bestseller author Antony Beevor voiced the English audio tour. In the underground Airborne Experience you will be transported into the very midst of the battle.

- A C98 contributionsA wonderful and deceptively large museum - so much more than meets the eye. The exhibits are well curated and clearly detail the stories. Everything is thoughtfully displayed and the transformation of the basement provides a wonderful crescendo to the visit. Would highly recommend a visit. We were fortunate enough to visit on the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden, so witnessed additional highlights such as a Dakota fly past and were surrounded by an abundance of VIPs and veterans visiting.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 22, 2024
- TonyUnited Kingdom48 contributionsReally excellent museum. Loads of interesting things to see on the top 2 floors and then the amazing ‘airborne experience’ in the basement. Well worth the €15 adult admission fee. The museum is in the house that was HQ for the British forces in 1944, so in itself it has so much historical significance. It’s a short walk to the war cemetery through lovely Oosterbeek once you leave the museum. Oosterbeek is one stop on the train from Arnhem Centraal costing €3.2 for a return ticket.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten April 1, 2024
- Andy BPerth, Australia4 contributionsI’ve been to many military museums over the years and this one of, if not best experiences I’ve had. The museum is well thought out with an exceptional audio guide which worked well with my wife’s hearing aid and cochlear implant. The stories of the veterans and the towns people who lived through the battle were brilliantly told through the exhibits and recorded stories. The Airborne experience was immersive and helped to put the exhibits in the Hartenstein Hotel into context. Well worth a visit, we spent at least four hours there and then walked to the cemetery. Arnhem and Oosterbeek are beautiful and definitely worth a visit. Travel from Amsterdam was easy by train and bus. The museum is a fitting tribute to all who took part in the battle, it was a privilege and a pleasure to visit.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 2, 2024
- sallyesomEdlesborough, United Kingdom176 contributionsA jam packed museum with great audio commentary which adds to the experience and you can select the specific exhibits to your taste too. Great explanation of Operation Market Garden. A very sobering and informative trip. Our teens particularly enjoyed the immersive experience in the basement. We spent a couple of hours here and could have stayed longer to find out more.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 31, 2024
- JD9753Zurich, Switzerland14 contributionsThe museum was very interesting with moving stories of the courageous men who fought there in 1944. In the Battle of Arnhem and operation Market Garden. It was moving to learn how many lost their lives during the failed operation and how the Dutch had suffered during the war and the attempts by the British and Polish tried to liberate the town..Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 22, 2024
- CopCodderCape Cod, Massachusetts266 contributionsNice little museum located in former headquarters of British First Parachute Division during Operation Market Garden. Has some good artifacts, but also tells the personal stories of a number of participating people, and not just soldiers. Between the history of the building and the captivating exhibits, well worth a trip.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 10, 2024
- MattclarksonChelsea, United Kingdom78 contributionsAn excellent way to learn about the battle for the bridges in Arnhem 80 years ago, with a real focus on Airborne Forces. The displays are interesting and the various films explaining the phases of the battle are excellent. Good shop and cafe all add to the overall impression of an excellent museum with a wealth of history as a key building during the battle at the centre of Operation Market Garden. Look for the Lonsdale door as a testament to utter bravery and inspirational leadershipVisited September 2024Traveled on businessWritten September 24, 2024
- Tracey A5 contributionsLeave plenty of time for your visit to this museum. The top two floors include artefacts and personal stories from Operation Market Garden in September 1944. You are given an audio box and there’s lots of interesting stories and facts to listen to as you go around. It’s so well laid out. At the moment there is a temporary exhibition on one floor about a hospital in Arnhem that was originally established by an order of German nuns. They continued to work in the hospital besides the Dutch and English after September 1944. Finally, there is a very interactive experience exhibition on the lowest floor. Really well done and very evocative. Unfortunately it was raining hard so we didn’t get the chance to walk around the park surrounding the museum. We did visit the war cemetery though which was very moving. We need these types of reminders!Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 16, 2024
- Piet N1 contributionA beautiful museum about the battle of Arnhem. The parking lot next to it is far too small and the large parking lots within walking distance have a maximum parking time. Well, and then you park the car in a street, in my opinion very annoying for the residents of Oosterbeek. Too bad that wasn't thought of.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 25, 2024
- YoastDriebergen-Rijsenburg, The Netherlands13 contributionsThe exhibition in the building did not appeal to us much, but the experience in the basement is so lifelike that it takes you away. We are going to include this museum in our day trip about “Operation Market Garden”. The adjacent restaurant is perfect for a delicious lunch.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 28, 2024

Definitely one of the best museums to give an account of the stories and experiences of WW2, even if it's just one specific part of it.
The museum is situated in the beautiful Villa town Oosterbeek. It may be a little small but it is well worth a visit. One thing this museum does perfectly is connecting the visitor to lots of unique and personal stories.
At entry I was helped by a really friendly lady who thoroughly explained the lay-out of the museum and how the (free) audiotour works.
As you start going through the museum you first pass through the museum café. Unlike normally at museums the beverages here are priced extremely fairly and on top of that the coffee was really good. I really appreciated this start to my museum visit.
My personal advice for this museum is to really allow yourself time to take in and appreciate the many unique and personal stories from witnesses which are brought to you in many ways. I would say it leaves more of an impression than the objects on display. If you do, the Airborne Experience in the basement will leave a much bigger impression aswell.
If you have the time and the weather is nice I recommend to visit the war cemetry after the museum visit to let your visit sink in.

This museum is phenomenally well laid out and full of absorbing information. 2-3 hours are suggested but I would recommend leaving more time if you can. There is much to see, to read and to listen to as well as the 'taste' of the battle in the basement and the numerous stories of what happened to Dutch Jews who fled the country only to return to fight with the allied forces. We were there 3 hours and could easily have made use of another hour. There are walks in the park too which we did not have time for and wish we had had extra time.

A very interesting and informative museum which is very immersive in its own gentle and respectful way. The old house really gives you a feeling of what it was like and the commentary is absorbing. The stories depicted and explained are haunting and moving and the film show really explains the logistics of the battle in the area. You certainly leave knowing a lot more information and can’t fail to be touched by the sad stories of loss in Arnhem.
There was an exhibition in place when we visited depicting the Jewish losses and stories from that time.
The new immersive floor is fantastic in giving a real life perspective of the ravages of war and perhaps piques the interest of children a little more that the exhibitions upstairs but all in all we spend a very informative couple of hours and would certainly return again to learn even more!
We last visited some 20 years ago so we would encourage anyone to return who hadn’t visited in the last 5 years since refurbishment and refreshment of the museum.
Very close to the Arnhem War Cemetery so we visited both that day.

A special museum, not least because the headquarters of the British troops were located here during the Battle of Arnhem. Liberators are given a name, a face in this museum. You can follow the experiences of some compatriots or allies through their belongings and their stories. You also see how these people fared after the war. The 'experience' is highly recommended. You get into a glider and then land on the Arnhem battlefield. You get out there.

We visited the Airborne Museum at Hartenstein in Oosterbeek, the Netherlands, and were impressed by the exhibits and the history of the place. The museum is dedicated to the Battle of Arnhem, which took place in September 1944, when the Allies attempted to establish a bridgehead on the north bank of the Rhine. The highlight of the museum is the Airborne Experience, an award-winning exhibition that takes you through the area around Arnhem and Oosterbeek during the battle. You can see, hear and feel what it was like to be part of this dramatic event.

We enjoyed our visit to the Museum which is well thought out and put together. The experience is a reminder of how awful war is and how it impacts so dreadfully on so many people’s lives. Our visit took an hour and a half and we ended it with a lovely (reasonably priced) Cappuccino in the small cafe.

There are several places and museums in the area which are connected with the battle of Arnhem (and all of them are worth visiting), however Airborne Museum at Hartenstein is definitely the best place to learn more about the battle.
The museum exhibits numerous memorabilia, photos and finds from the battlefield, and everything is carefully described. To make it even more interesting and genuine, everything is arranged in the hotel, which was the headquarter of British Paratrooper Division, during the battle in September 1944.
Part of the exhibition is permanent, while in the lower part of the museum (basement) there was periodic exhibition related not only to the battle itself, but also to the local population and its fate during and after the battle.
Very interesting indeed, even for those who have read a dozen books about the battle and know (almost) everything about the military aspects of Operation Market-Garden.

I honestly didn't expect to like it as much as I did. It is a very intimate and personal story that they tell. As if you were really there when there was a war. There are 5 floors with different informal topics and after about an hour I had seen everything. You shouldn't go there with young children, but it is interesting for teenagers and older.

One of the best military museums in Europe. Excellent displays of equipment and presentations on the Market Garden raids. Set over several floors the basement contains an incredible "live action" experience of being in a glider and landing in a war zone. Excellent effects make it a very real experience. Brilliant cafe serving very good coffee and cakes at excellent prices. Can spend several hours here and still not read everything. The car park is not well signed, but beside that this is a real must see for anyone interested in Market Garden or WW2 in general.

Very interesting museum that is still undergoing more additions to its already extensive collection, due to ongoing work there is no parking on site but you can park at the restaurant/ cafe next door free of charge, if you are a veteran with proof e.g defence discount card you can get in for half price. Staff are great very helpful and as always speak excellent English!!

Is it possible too purchase an airborne flag from the museum aka the small maroon version with Pegasus and bellerphon and the dates 17th to 25th of September 1944.

Didn't see this in particular but contact them direct there are various other outlets in the area so you shouldn't have too much problem. Enjoy your visit

Jazeker, er is een lift en de medewerkers zijn erg behulpzaam. Er komen veel veteranen en die zijn vaak niet erg mobiel. Dus geen probleem. Veel plezier.

How can you get to the Airborne museum from Arnhem and how long would it take by public transport?
Written September 4, 2016
There's a bus running frequently to the museum area (as well as the cemetery). The bus runs from the Central bus and rail station in Arnhem
Written September 16, 2016
Is there a car park at the site and if there is then how is it accessed? I will be visiting on my way to the ferry so time will be short therefore a bit of preplanning helps.
Thanks
Written January 12, 2016
There is a small car park which you can access from the main road. There is no charge for parking here. In case this car park is full, you can drive on for about 100 meters, passing the museum on your right hand side until you reach a somewhat larger (also free) car park in the adjacent residential neighbourhood. A walk of about 100 meters will lead you to the entrance.

We are wondering if there is public transportation that we can take between the Arnhem Oosterbeek Commonwealth War Cemetery and the Airborne Museum at Hartenstein. We are coming to the cemetery via train from Amsterdam. thank you.

The Utrechtseweg in Oosterbeek is under construction at the moment, and that is why bus line 1 does not drive the normal route. Is it possible for you to walk? The War Cemetery (Van Limburg Stirumweg) is near the Oosterbeek train station, it's a 5 minutes walk. From there you could walk to the museum in about 20 minutes.

Hi Laurence.
Thanks to birtley21 for pointing out the train and bus to the museum. Besides No. 1 bus you can take No. 52 (direction Wageningen) which stops at the Airborne Museum 'Hartenstein' busstop, directly in front of the museum.
Plan your train trip via ns.nl website. It's only 65 minutes. The bus will take you to the museum in about 15 minutes.
