Even though the sight says it is on private property it is still accessible and worth visiting. It is a great reminder that Augustus John was once a resident of Fordingbridge. Hopefully in time it will be put in a more prominent site.

Very characterful statue which still has echos of controversy among locals. Augustus used to pat the head of every child he passed in the high street - just in case they were one of his - enough said..
Sit a while by the river - you can wander through the gates down to the end of the riverside section as this is a public area (despite occasional information to the contrary by one mislead property owner in the environs).

Whilst in Fordingbridge we past this statue. I understand there is a local museum but some information next to this would help give some understanding of who he is to visitors.

This grade 2 listed statue by Ivor Roberts-Jones has had quiet a chequered history! Visit the wonderful Fordingbridge Museum to find out more. Loved and loathed by locals, Augustus John was a gifted artist and his statue reflects his personality! The slightly scary statue stares out over the River Avon and looks like it is about to step off its pedestal!

I had read a little about him from the information post in one of the car parks. But if you walk across the bridge he is on one side of it (opposite side to The George Pub) if you cross right over the bridge there is a nice park with children's play equipment and you can get to the rivers edge there an get a pretty good view of the bridge from the other way to the view from the statue side

One of the many interesting features of this town - always interesting and a pleasant walk alongside the River Avon

The statue has quite a modern look to it but very cleverly artistic. Located right beside the river in Fordingbridge, opposite the "George " public house in Bridge street. Stand with your back to the pub main entrance and look across the road and Augustus John is down the steps on the other side of the road.
Augustus John led a bohemian lifestyle and led a commune in the New Forest for some years.
