If that's what you're looking for, it might be very interesting to go by car down to Berenice and further (if the military let you). You have kilometers of empty road with the desert and mountains on one side and the Red Sea on the other. No resorts or any stuff like that.
Berenice is a sort of “favela” with 20-30 wood houses so don't expect to find a real city here. You can stop at the check-point bar and observe the soldiers chatting and drinking tea. Everyone is very friendly except they don't want you to take pictures (Egyptian military obsession). The “bar” itself is curious, with naif pharaonic decorations. Everything is very simple, there is no floor and you have tons of flies everywhere but it's a unique experience to sit and have a tea here. You feel you're at the edge of the world.
