The trail starts from the parking area and takes about 50 minutes one way at normal speed. Despite it being a 1 km ascend, the trail is fairly steep and about 40% of it is on loose gravel/stones so you will need proper hiking shoes....More

We rented a car and drove to the parking lot. As mentioned in the earlier posts, the toilet is what you would expect in national parks; flies, smell etc. The trail starts inside some dense bushes where you would have to squeeze through some the...More

We joined a guided trek as we did not have a car. Our guide was very good and friendly and had all the safety equipment necessary for an emergency (not that we had one). The trek to the top is easy , you go through...More

Of the several hikes that we did in Hokkaido, this was perhaps the easiest and still one of the most impressive. We did not have a car and were staying in Sapporo, so we booked a day hike through Hokkaido Experience. Because we were the...More

We visited on a weekday afternoon and there were few other walkers. The usual bear warnings apply in this area. The climb to the crater is initially in thick vegetation but opens up and provides splendid views of the surrounding landscape and the volcano itself....More

I was there in June 2018. I don't live in Japan so I can't tell you the situation now. It was not a tour by the way. I drove to the foot of the mountain and hiked up myself.
