It is a must see if you are visiting the town of Vega de San Mateo. It offers a wide variety of freshly harvested locally grown products but it only opens during the weekend. Its better to go on saturdays as it might get too crowded on sundays.

Mercado Agricola Vega de San Mateo is one of the most importants markets in the Gran Canaria Island. It is located in the little town called Vega de San Mateo, near the main city of the island. Here you can see, taste and buy a lot of local products, which come from all parts of the island. I came here to buy: honey, wine and cheeses, and I got it! especially cheeses, I can tasted more than 10 cheeses and I bought some of them. If you want taste local products, come here!

San Mateo is a lovely place to go to on a Sunday. There is dancing in the centre of the town and there are two markets you can visit - collectors and market produce.
Currently there are major works taking place just to the side of the market and this affects the ambience and quality of the place, but it is worth the journey through the lush scenery of the north of the island. If you are travelling from the south be aware that it might be quite a bit colder than you would expect.

By coincidence we were in the city for the trip and we wondered what is the crowd going to....we were amazed what all is grown in the place and you may buy and try...for really small money authentic fruits and vegetables, farmers cheese and backery...we bought great fresh cheese and some exotic fruits as cactus has...

It is smaller in real life than it appears in the pictures. Before we ventured out there to the middle of the island, We had researched it a bit, just that We pictured it to be bigger. (Based on pictures in the internet).
Anyway, it is a nice trip up the mountain (tip: take a sweater even if you were sweating just a few minutes before down the hill).
Fresh produce at a good price. (It is a farmers market, not Trader Joe’s ) ;)

This is a place i recommend, either you are tourist looking for better food than small grocery shops or living on the island and want to shop some quality veggies or fruits for a week.
This place opens up every Sunday and is full of locals offering their goods.
Go there early enough though, other wise you have trouble finding a parking spot.

Mercado Agricola de Vega de San Mateo is the main market located in the town, which is in the Northern region of Gran Canaria Island. Here you can buy a lot of traditional food of the island, especially cheeses, vegetables, fruits and wines. In fact, I have gone 3 times to Gran Canaria and all times I came here: the perdect place to buy local products. So, when I return to my country, I can eat some tasting of local products of Gran Canaria. A top, if you are a food-local-lover, when you travel.

Only open at weekends but had a range of locally grown and produced food. There was a wide range of herbs and spices, fruit and veg, cheeses, honey, olives and wine.
