The guy in Alicante's Tourist Office recommended a visit to this attractive part of the old city of Alicante and it is certainly well worth a visit. It's picture postcard pretty with lots of little old houses in steep, narrow streets nestled together in the shadow of the city's Castillo de Santa Barbara. The whitewashed houses contrast with their colourful displays of potted flowers and plants and brightly painted window and door frames. In the highest part you'll find the Ermita de Santa Cruz church and a fantastic view of the city. Santa Cruz is a short but steepish walk from the historic part of the city. A photographer's dream and we were told that, unsurprisingly, lots of artists choose to live here.

It was to hot to give this area a visit in the summer but having visited at New Year we were able to fully appreciate the old town. Stunning views and very old Spanish houses to admire. Only 5 minutes from the city centre. Would recommend.

Descend from the Castle on the outer rampart which takes you down to the Barrio. The steps are quite steep in places so be prepared. When you reach the bottom turn left up a short hill into the Barrio. This old part of Alicante is worth seeing from this perspective. Walk and be amazed at the white small houses decorated in blue with flowers and flower pots adorning the streets. The narrow streets are home to families and a place where children still play. Stop at one of the restaurants on the way and enjoy lunch or a drink or both at very reasonable prices.

I stayed in a little B&B in this part of Alicante, so I got steeped into traditional Alicante pretty fast. And I loved every moment I spent there, walking different paths, streets, roads, small plaza, seeing the people. It was really very nice. This zone is home to many of the places you will want to visit in Alicante. Budget extra time just to enjoy the Barrio.

It's hard to believe this place is in Alicante! We came here in the evening time, no other tourists to be seen. Quaint little cobblestone streets with picturesque houses at every corner. Fantastic for a nice evening stroll to see what felt like the 'real Spain'. We loved it!

The old town, small streets mostly on steps going up the mountain.
We walked through the older town to the parc and then up to the castle. Nice area quite quiet.

This is maybe people's idea of a typical Spanish barrio - whitewashed houses and flowerpots and grannies sitting on steps chatting, and yes, it did seem to be pretty much like this. Not a tour group in sight, no souvenir shops, no multi-lingual menus,no houses ripped down and the holes filled with blue plastic and orange foam. Only problem, it's vertical! Steps and steps going on forever, but good view from the top, showing what a Spanish town is really like.

At the foot of the hill on which sits the Castillo Santa Barbara the Barrio area is part of the old quarter of Alicante and is enchanting with winding narrow streets and steps opening unexpectedly to give access to a small taverna or a glimpse of little balconies with flowering plants in pots. A real taste of how real people live here. Stop for a cervesa in one of the taverns, sit outside and soak up the atmosphere. A highlight of our visit.

El Barrio de Santa Cruz in Alicante is the old quarter of the city on the slope of Benacantil mount at the feet of the Cathedral of San Nicolas.
A very lively neighborhood at night where people of all ages go to enjoy the tapas bars, taverns and discotheques.
By daytime it's a nice place to go for a walk to enjoy the beauty of the architecture.
Small white houses and old buildings with balconies decorated with flowers on narrow streets makes it a nice area to go for a walk.
There is a nice chapel, the Ermita de la Santa Cruz on the top of the quarter, close to the ramparts of Santa Barbara Castle.

Once you have taken the elevator up to the castle and seen it all, then go down through the castle garden to the old town.
Here is the best atmosphere and the best cafes
