The air was still and cold and the view across the valley was fantastic well worth a visit to see the church, it was a shame the building was closed but it was over the Christmas and New Year period will come back again in the summer months

Historical basilica in a small square, the inside is beautiful and inviting. Bells toll all day and begs for a visit. Open twice a day afternoon and at night.

My wife and I have been to over 200 cathedrals and churches on our trips to Europe. The Santa Maria Church is quite unimpressive from the outside with just a simple limestone facade. The church on the inside is small but is very well decorated and the altar is very special. The atmosphere is calming and restful. This is a... More

This church is beautiful, whether you are catholic or not you must visit it! And the amazing part of it, is that it was built on top of a muslim mosque when catholics invaded the city - the ruins of the mosque remain, so they have now built glass floors in some parts of the church and one can see... Be aware that this is a working church not a tourist destination. It is open really just for the purposes of services and for very limited hours. When we were there we sat quietly as there was a mass taking place, taking in the atmosphere. (We are not religious). It is fairly small, and other than the altar area, not... More

I would recommend to visit this church. Have a look at thye fine Maria altar and the central one. Afterwards go to the adjacent museum of contemporary art.

This old church is breathtaking when you go inside, it's ornate stonework and displays take you by surprise, it's a must see when in Alicante

If not beach weather worth a stroll through the old town and end up at the church where there a little bar / restaurant on the plaza opposite the church. Sometimes in the early evening there is live music on the plaza also adjacent to the large art gallery / museum.
