About
Set in the ancient heart of the city, opposite the monumental Basilica of Santa María, this imposing new building takes up an entire city block and encompasses the oldest civil construction in the city: the venerable Casa de La Asegurada, an outstanding example of Valencian baroque architecture built as a public wheat granary in 1685. Known as the MACA, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art is owned by the City Council and is one of Alicante's leading cultural venues. The construction and refurbishment project was designed by the architectural firm Sancho-Madridejos and funded by the Valencian Regional Government. It boasts a total floor space of 4680 m2 spread across four storeys and two basement levels, and features one temporary exhibition hall, four exhibition halls for the permanent collections, a library, teaching venues, an events hall, storerooms, workshops, plus quarters for security, administration and the like. The Museum's diaphanous spaces showcase its rich and varied collections of contemporary art according to highly rigorous museum programming in which conservation and education are given top priority.

    For art (and history) lovers
We like modern art, and if there's modern art museum, we'll be sure to visit. This museum was surprisingly big, with many interesting works. It also enlighted us how difficult history Spain has had recently. There was no happy art.

    Beautiful modern art pieces
Interesting museum of the modern art, maybe the collection is not very rich, but there are quite a few of the interesting pieces. Especially some beautiful art pieces by Miro who was apparently originally from Alicante. Worth visiting if you are in the area.

Outstanding collection of 20th Century Art and a fascinating library. All free.
This is a superbly curated gallery. There is a clear irony that here is free thought, expressed through the eye of the artist, that is yours to dive into for free while, next door, the Catholic basilica rules your head in a clichéd display of gaudy tat and demands 6€ for the privilege. I choose the free thought of 20th century Spain and its struggle against Franco. I would visit Alicante again just for this place and spend several days benefiting from it's riches.

I want to echo the review before. As an artist and frequent visitor to galleries around the world I was astounded by the rude and hostile environment of this gallery. On walking in the lady on reception barked at us. We couldnt understand what she was saying so explained (in Spanish) that we didn’t understand, but she just kept repeating what she was saying aggressively. She then said ‘is free, ah now you come’ in a most patronising manner. We already knew it was free, we were just confused by what she was saying to us! Then we were followed round by Uber miserable gallery attendants, shouted at for trying to take a photo (without flash which is commonplace in most galleries and there were no signs banning photos!) It is such a shame as the art is well curated and the gallery is great otherwise. Also the toilets don’t have locks which is quite scary especially if you are wearing a play suit!

We never made it into the museum. As a disabled person who is not great on their legs there were a total of FOUR disabled parking spaces near the museum. Everything else was too far away! As we had driven from Xalo we weren’t too happy. It was so disappointing…….

This art museum is located in the oldest civil building that is preserved in Alicante. The Baroque-style building dates from 1685 and is located next to the Basilica of Santa Maria. However, there is a new modern building attached and the museum interior looks very modern.

There are two art museums in Alicante located quite near to each other: MACA and MUBAG. Both have a free entrance. Both museums are quite small and can be easily combined on the same day.

MACA has an important collection of 20th-century art. It has works by Picasso, Dali, and Miro among others.

The design and the collection of this museum is perfect and surprising. Don't forget to take your time for the portraits series of Esther Ferrer. You also find a very spercial 3D Vasarely plus work of his son.

It's a nice little gallery spread over 3 floors and worth a visit.
What I can't understand is the obsession with preventing visitors taking photographs. If I had a visitor attraction I would be actively encouraging people to help promote it, like every other gallery I have every been in throughout Europe. Followed me around as if I was a drugs cartel baron .
