Pay attention during Covid-19
Dec 2020
During Covid-19, we experienced that the opening hours on the website are not the same as at the entrance. We arrived at 17 o clock and the entrance at the beach front was closed on Monday, while the website showed it was open untill 20o clock.

Worth visiting for the history and the views
Dec 2020
The elevator wasn't working because of Covid so you may need to walk up from the city. This is a pleasant walk with great views on the way up. There are a number of displays about the history of the castle and they are all free. Nicely laid out and worth visiting

Be King or Queen of the Castle for the Day

This is a must see for anyone visiting Alicante city or region! The views of the city, the marina and sea are incredible and there are places to sit and eat or quench your thirst as you climb higher and higher up through the castle.

Fabulous visit
Dec 2020 • Friends
It’s not easy to describe the far reaching views from the castle, the whole of Alicante is laid out in front of you. (And beyond). We caught a taxi from the centre of town €5 and walked back. A visit to the castle is a must do visit when staying in Alicante. Full of history, great place.

Beautiful views
Oct 2020
This was the highlight of our visit, fantastic views and well worth going up to see it.
There is a long tunnel in to the elevator from the base level, be sure to buy your ticket before walking all the way up the tunnel, the signage isn't good, bit typical of the Spanish.

What a place! I don't think I can say anything about this place that hasn't been said already. The place can also be reached by a car, but we took a walk instead, and it was worth it. At every turn there is a nice view point giving you a glimpse of the whole city that touches the sea. The beautiful dock is also visible at the corner. Visit the place when you have a blue sky and the pictures that you take would be amazing! It also has a nice museum at the top with ancient items, and a nice photo gallery describing many island forts.

Great photo spot

I was unable to access the interior but the views from the top are worth the trip on a clear sunny day! Not sure it would be suitable for the elderly or with mobility issues as the taxi could only access up to a certain point and the main part is further up.

There is an elevator going up to the Castle straight through the mountain on wich the Castle is built. Here they show you Some of the history of Alicante. Up at the castle you get beautifull views over Alicante and a lot of history to be discovered.

Grazie

Some info around the history of Alicante and the castle stretching back hundred of years. Most people just go for the views though. Check out the official website for more detail. Search for Castillo de Santa Barbara in Alicante.

Is it accessible to wheelchairs?

I’m sorry, just saw your question now. There is an elevator, but I’m not sure you can go in with a wheelchair when it’s very crowded.
