Modern large museum on whaling and fishing
Aug 2019
Spacious over 3 floors. Helpful staff. Learnt about whaling despite all information being in Spanish and Basque.
Interesting temporary exhibition on the variations in the Basque language and free jigsaw for the kids.

Charming - but all in spanish
Jul 2018 • Couples
A charming museum showing the history of Bermeo's fishermen and the role of their wives. You might seem a bit lost without spanish knowledge, all text and audio are in spanish.

NO doubt about that fishing has been, and still are, VERY important to citisens of Bermeo. The Arrantzaleen Museoa is full of fishing-stories and you get to know how to catch whales, anjovis and albacore tuna. Well worth a visit. If you are a teacher, entrence are Free...

Atractive exhibition in an historic building. Perfect visit of 45 minutes to know more about the town and its people and very close to the old port of Bermeo.

Interesting. Lots and lots of money expended by local authorities

Three of us wound our way up the steep steps and found a much easier descent. Extremely professional and polite attendant at entance. Paid 1.75 euros as we were "aged". Nevertheless we managed the stairs (three floors). Good explanations (no.guide) available including English (not videos which in Basque with rapid text in Spanish). Given the extaordinary and incredible valour and courage of this undoubtedly unique and historical community of Basque fishing folk who not only faced the extreme hazards of the Biscay (one of the most dangeros seas in the western world) to fish in local waters but incredibly set forth to go waling in long boats and harpoons and colonised areas of Nova Scotia in medieval times as fishing grounds, I believe this Bermeo museum needs a huge boost to recount with much, much greater emphasis the unique and enormous contribution, not only in innumerable lives lost in the conquest of the seas, but also its prodigous place in the annals of European sea navigation and, not least, discovery.

Modern, well-planned museum that teaches you a lot about one of the most important sources of income for the Basque people back in the days.
