We used the ferry across to Greencastle. It was only a short crossing and not at all choppy! Using the ferry saved us a much longer journey around Derry/Londonderry to get up towards Malin Head in Donegal..Would recommend using the ferry for convenience. One just needs to check when it is running. There is no set timetable.

We were staying in Greencastle, so took the Ferry over to Magilligan point so we could then explore the large beach there. Great service, very smooth, regular and not dear. Check the running times as we were there in April and it was about to close down again for a few weeks.

We have used this ferry service before & know it's very efficient & very good. On this occasion we wanted to cross Lough Foyle in mid September - Tuesday 14th to be exact, so I rang in advance a few days before we travelled to check the times of the sailings & make sure the service would still be operating, as it was (amazingly) coming to the end of the season. I was assured all was ok, but on arrival at Greencastle for the morning sailing we discovered there were only Fri/Sat/Sun crossings, so we were 3 days too early! So we'd advise anyone to check & double check (even the evening before) to be sure of the ferry crossings.

I can only apologise and I have no idea where you got the misinformation that we would be sailing on the 14th September. All of our office personnel and crew were aware that daily sailings would continue until Sunday 13th September before moving to weekend only service. This is our regular sailing pattern throughout September and every employee of the company was aware of that. The information was available on our website, our social media and in email responses. Please contact us again directly to check sailings. Our website is the best place for information as the sailing status is updated if there is any interruption to our service and would have had the information you required available on it from early September. Thanks and hopefully we will see you again. Foyle Ferry

Took our motorhome on the ferry to reduce the travel time to Malin Head. €15 for a one-way ticket and it was definitely worth it. The views are beautiful and the time saving is great! Very smooth crossing and you can stand up on the viewing deck to take in the scenery.

Travellers should be aware that the Rathmullen-Buncrana vehicular and foot passenger ferry no longer operates. There is no notice to this effect at the Rathmullen wharf, although the ferry timetable is still posted, prominently and proudly, at the pier and all the traffic signs give no indication that the ferry is not operating. Enquiries at a local cafe brought the reaction "No I don't think it has started yet - funny there were two people here yesterday asking the same thing.".

Good morning, I can only apologise for your experience. The Lough Foyle Ferry Company have operated under contract from the Donegal County Council to provide the ferry service between Rathmullan and Buncrana in the past. This year we didn't seek to tender the contract and Donegal County Council are still currently seeking an alternative operator. We were under the impression that all the signs had been taken down and can only apologise that one of the signs were over looked. I will have someone take the sign down this week to save other travellers the same confusion. Thank you for your comments.

The Lough Foyle Ferry Company, run a seasonal car ferry from Buncrana to Rathmullan, as well as the Greencastle to Magilligan route, in Derry. It takes about 40 minutes to cross, but saves a lot of driving time. It's 5 Euro return, for foot passengers, or 24 Euro return, for cars, and as many bodies that you can fit inside! if your a cyclist, your bike travels free, and if the weather is bad, there are two sheltered areas on board.

I heard it's contract was not renewed. My wife and I are visiting in early June and I was looking forward to using it. Both sides look lovely.

Good morning, The Lough Foyle Ferry Company will not be seeking to extend their current contract in March 2016. Donegal County Council along with Causeway Coast and Glens Council will be tendering for a new operator for the service this month and hopefully they will have more information soon. If you contact the Donegal County Council/ Causeway Coast and Glens Council closer to your planned journey they will be able to let you know if a continuation of service has been arranged.
