On a scale of 0-10 I give 10+++
I've ridden with Doug Cregger and brother Bill several times. My husband and I always love it. Fabulous horsemen, courteous, friendly, helpful. Well cared for horses.
Can't go wrong with a trip with them. They try to match horses up with the rides experience, or lack of experience.
I have gone by myself several times when my husband is out of town. I always feel safe and well cared for.
Research the wild ponies at Grayson Highlands. They are beautiful.

Beautiful Horses, Beautiful Country

We had a great experience and highly recommend. Make sure you’ve either entered the address into your GPS or get directions before leaving because the driveway is a not well marked and there’s no cell service (but you’ll see many horses grazing in the pasture). The horses are well taken care of and gentle. The scenery is beautiful. Doug promptly responded by email and was very accommodating. We’ll be back!

Doug lead us on a 4 hour ride with Bill at the tail. They were both wonderful. The horses were great, well trained and well cared for. They have horses for every experience level. The view on top of the mountain is fabulous.

Not as advertised
Jul 2019 • Friends
1) Website says $50/hour, Doug wanted $60/hour when we showed up. Not a huge deal b/c I get that horses are expensive to maintain. 2) Doug said we would ride for 2 hours....we rode for 1 hour and 3 minutes. When I brought this up his answer was "Your group is faster then others".
So buyer beware...You don't get what's advertised.

The Good....we showed up the day before to make sure we knew where he was located and the horses were being worked on by a Farrier.

Authentic Adventure

My brother and I went on a half-day trail ride with Doug in mid-December. He followed up with my reservation, calling me 2 days prior to confirm that the weather was in our favor and we could ride. His directions to our rendezvous point were spot-on and easy to follow. He had a calm presence and was full of stories and wisdom which he openly shared with us. His horses are well cared for and have delightful temperaments. My brother and I have little to no riding experience and we felt safe in Doug's care.

The half day ride was the perfect length. We got to see stunning landscapes and many wild ponies. I would highly recommend Appalachian Horseback Riding Adventures!

Riding fun!

Went on a once in a life time experience with four grandchildren, my daughter and son in law! We saw no ponies today but did see lots of long horns . Doug and his brother Bill were terrific. They were helpful with the kids and made those that had never ridden feel as comfortable as those who had risen for several years by their wise choices of extremely well trained horses. It was a super fun way to enjoy the beauty of the area!

This is a great place to ride horses in the Mt. Rogers area. Trail riding at its best, with competent friendly staff and lovely horses.

My husband and I have been wanting to ride horses for awhile. We were going to hike Mt. Rogers, but we decided to ride instead. I stumbled upon Appalachian, and I'm very glad I did! The guide we had was Bill. His brother, Doug, usually does the rides. Bill was laid back and pure country. Since I had never rode, I was nervous. Bill put my mind at ease, and gave me the gentle horse named Knight Rider. He is their go to horse for kids and beginners. I was not let down. This horse was wonderful!
Anyways, we started up the mountain on a two hour ride. Fall is one of the best times to go on this ride! It's cooler, the leaves are changing (beautiful scenery) and no bugs are bothering you. The horses are so careful and gentle. It's peaceful and so quiet. Bill answered any questions we had. He was awesome! He isn't one of those continuous talking guides, lol.
We wanted to do a longer ride to the top of the mountain, but we didn't have time that day (not due to Bill; we had things come up). Next time I'm in Virginia, I'll definitely be going back! There is NO cell phone service down there. I'd call a day in advance to confirm the ride. Take some bottled water and snacks. The long ride stops a few times to let the horses rest. Check the weather, as well, so you can dress appropriately.
