The monastery is quite beautiful, but not particularly unique. The top highlight, however, is the 8th century gate hall, which contains frescoes from the 8th and 13th centuries, as well as an old altar cross and the crown of Queen Theodelinda, which is also 1400 years old. There are also art exhibitions there.

We were very lucky that Sister Magdalena gave us a very interesting and highly informative tour of the church and the abbey, and that on a public holiday. We have the utmost respect for the nuns in the monastery, who are solely responsible for its upkeep. The monastery looked fantastic! Thank you for these very valuable 1 1/2 days with you, dear Sister Magdalena.

From Herreninsel it is a 5-minute boat ride, then you can go around in half an hour or 2 hours, depending on how long you plan to spend. There is a lot to see, a small pottery, a fish smokehouse... you get a first overview of the apartments and holiday homes on the island. The landscape is stunningly beautiful and very attractive, but you should remember that this island cannot be reached by car.

Spent about an hour and half here after visiting HerrenChiemsee. Walked the whole Island twice. Island is quite small consisting of the church/nunnery, several restaurants , a few touristy shops, and a few houses. Most of the restaurants and shops had been shut down by time we visited October 8th but there were a few things open. I thought it was a nice enough experience while we were right there anyways. Doesn't take much time and only costs a couple extra Euros for the boat. I'd recommend checking it out as long as you're in the area.

Fraueninsel (Women's Island) is thus named because it has been the site of a female convent founded all the way back in 782 AD. While the neighboring island, Herreninsel (Men's Island) was the site of a male monastery which was founded even earlier, around 620 AD.

Secularization in 1803 led to the monastery on Herreninsel to be dissolved definitively, whereas the convent on Fraueninsel was suspended between 1803 and 1835. A time during which the nuns were allowed to continue living there, and a buyer was never found. In 1836 the convent was re-founded with the requirement that the nuns provide schooling for girls.
The nuns ran a school, in various forms, until 1995.

As this is still a functioning convent with around 30 nuns present, it is not possible to visit the entire complex.
It is possible to visit the convents small church, which also serves as parish church to the 300 permanent residents of the island, as well as the medieval Gatehall (Torhalle). One can also buy products made by the nuns at the convent shop, such as liqueurs, marzipan, gingerbread.

On the day of my visit, October 31st 2016, and after having had a late lunch on the island, the Gatehall appeared to be closed already.

I did visit the small church and found it lovely, one could literally feel that this place had been a place of worship for well over 1000 years. I also chose to light two candles for my late grandparents.
Then I walked around on the outside as the sun was starting to go lower and lower on the horizon.

Didn't think about buying anything from the shop, but I have heard that the products made there are supposed to be really good, and I would definitely take some with me on a future trip.

It is a well organized boat trip from either Gstad or Prien over to the Fraueninsel, where all visitors find their own program... Some go for picnic some for sunbathing some for swimming some for the interesting history some for eating - there is so much to discover in a tranquil atmosphere
Prizes for boats are fine, restaurants: some exaggerated some are ok

When visiting Chiemse you usually take the Ferry Schfffhart to visit Herrenchiemsee Palace
Then you continue to the next island: Fraueninsel.

During the trip on the ferry you can see from far away this beautiful Monastery. You can see it clearly already far from the island.
You can't visit in, may be you'll be luckier than us ... we could not.
All the atmosphere in the island is quiet and peaceful as this Monastery is.
It is surrounded by beautiful greenery and houses with flowery gardens.
It is definitely worth the trip and even stopping for a good meal at one of the restaurants in the island or at least for a good coffee and cake.

The weather was not favorable to us, nevertheless the gardens were so beautiful that we were not deterred and actually quite enjoyed the visit...

If you are around Chiemse, this visit is definitely worth your time.

As well a small but lovely cemetery. I was a little surprised to see General Jodl of WW II fame buried here.

The church's patron saint appears to be a nun who helps couples conceive or perhaps overcome difficulties in childbirth. Either way, there is a hidden spot around behind the alter where pictures of happy babies and thanks from parents can be seen.

This is a simply furnished clean and incredibly relaxing place to stay. Like slightly upmarket school rooms. You will sleep well, wake up to beautiful views and feel refreshed and relaxed. A really wonderful place for seminars large or small and depressingly priced
