Located in the western suburbs of Tokyo, the temple was originally a villa built in 1915 by a member of the aristocratic parliament and deputy chairman, Jiangpu, and was renamed "Wu Yi Park", after which it was bought by Mitsubishi Fujitsu's family of Ikasaki, acquired by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 1974. Temple Valley House Garden is located in the southern cliff of Woo-Tai, cleverly utilizing the high and low slope design to make the backpacking style of the spring garden of the Ocean Compromise, the top of the Tai-Tai is a large lawn, a tunnel of pine, a fountain shed, oriented towards the western park design, and the red leaf stone on the cliff is a Japanese building, sitting in the stone to the cliff to see the past low, the Japanese garden has a water-flowing, suburban swimming pool, flying stone and other views. Temple Valley House Garden is also a sightseeing attraction, unfortunately in mid-November has not entered the red leaf season, only one or two trees have changed color. Temple Valley Garden is not far from Tokyo City District, with few tourists, and you can experience the peaceful beauty of the Japanese garden.

I did a live-streamed tour on Heygo with Eriko in this garden. Autumn colors are seen during our visit and the garden is landscaped to include its natural terrains of slopes, valley and ponds. It offers quiet peaceful sanctuary not far from central Tokyo in the Kokubunji area. Good for nature lovers.

Just outside the center of Tokyo is this beautiful district of Kokubunji. The park is very beautiful with manicured gardens very relaxing the walk among cherry trees.
If you are in this neighborhood of Tokyo it is worth taking a ride in this park

The Tonogaya Park is tiny, tucked away (a short walk south from the Kokubunji station), and largely free of tourists. Despite its size, it had more beautiful trees, ponds, flowers, and scenery of any garden I went to in Tokyo. What drew us to this park, however, is the fact that it has a bamboo grove. I don't know of any other park right in the heart of Tokyo that has bamboo like this: stunning! We decided against a trip to Kyoto to see the bamboo forest, so we needed a place in Tokyo to see bamboo and this park was perfect. We took so many pictures there -- definitely my favorite park in Tokyo!

This is the beautiful Japanese garden! It's a perfect place taking a walk:) Until now, I have looked for the place I can get the peace of mind. This is it.
It takes about 30 minutes for around the garden but you can spend all day long. I recommend to visit here in autumn season. A lot of colorful leaves will welcome you!

This park/garden is located about 100 meters east of the south exit of the Kokubunji Station on the Chuo Line in Tokyo. It is very easy to get to and is located on the south side of the street. There is no public parking so take the train.

It is the site of a "country home" of the Iwasaki family who owned one of the pre-war zaibatsu. There is a small house, open to the public and an enchanting set of gardens. Spring brings a few but not an abundance of cherry blossoms, summer the usual assortment of seasonal flowers with an excellent stand of timber bamboo as well as hagi, bush clover, in the late summer covering an arbor through which you can walk. The fall proper is quite excellent with very nice maple trees scattered about the garden.

There are several natural springs as this was on the edge of the Musashi escarpment and springs abound in this area. In addition there is an excellent tea house where you can sit and take in the view of the lower garden, small pond and a small waterfall. Tea is not served to the public although you can arrange to rent the tea house. There seems to be no restriction if you want to buy a lunch at the station and eat it on the large balcony while enjoying the view.

Because it is on the edge of the escarpment I can not recommend it for someone in a wheel chair since about 1/2 of the garden is not accessible.

As this is technically one of Tokyo's public parks the admission fee is quite low, with a substantial discount for seniors.

I have been there a number of times, and taken guests on several of my trips, all of whom seem to have enjoyed the day. Closed on Mondays and Tuesday following a national holiday. I have never been there when it was crowded in the least, one of Tokyo's secret little places not known even to most Japanese.

I recommend this as a 1/2 day trip, although if you want to make a full day of it you can walk about 1,000 meters to the site of the original Kanto Kokubunji Temple which has a few original buildings and one very impressive surviving gate. There is a map at the station exit showing how to reach the temple which is also on the south side of the station but to the west.

Tonogayato-teien garden.

Visited Early Nov. 2018.
Located very close to Kokubunji station, Chuo-line, Tokyo.
Approximately 25 min. from Shinjuku by rapid train to Kokubunji.

This is the old Japanese style garden, established around 100 years ago.
Faced the edge of the Musashino plateau, so you can see the gush underground water and small pound.
Area is not so big, 1 hour is enough for walk around the garden.

Also you can enjoy leaf color change in Autumn and fresh green leaf in Spring.
Entrance fee is only 150 Japanese yen (=1.1 US$) per parson.

There are many restaurant near the station and inside the station building.

A delightful and beautiful garden with history old buildings blossoming trees and many birds. A lovely place to sit and contemplate from the open sided rest house. Maples in autumn but no Sakura in spring. Instead there is plum and wintersweet or robai to enjoy. The best place in Kokubunji and a great place to take photos.

Tonogayato is one of the best of the Japanese gardens in the Tokyo area (few on the ground compared to Kyoto). Its popularity has caught on in the last couple of years, but still tranquil enough on weekdays. It is at its best in autumn, Nov to early December, with red foliage. It has been listed in my new book "Hidden Gardens of Japan", available via Amazon Japan and Kinokuniya USA.

This is a local Japanese garden currently owned and operated by Tokyo City Hall. It was built by the Iwasaki Family (the founding family of Mitsubishi Corp.). The garden is one of a few Japanese gardens in the areas open for public with a minimal fee. You may experience a cream of cream of Japanese traditional garden design all year round. Off course autumn is very nice for color changing scenery. When threes were covered by snow, the surrounding of the old tea house is very neat.
