If you are a Japanese food enthusiast or have read and liked the book “Good Food from a Japanese Temple” by Soie Yonoda, you will like the meal at Sanko-in.

I loved it!

Note that they do not serve tourist food! But all vegetable, seasonal, served and prepared kaiseki style. If you think tonkatsu, omoniyaki and takoyaki are typical Japanese meals, then this place might not be for you.

The sophisticated, but small menu varies with the seasons. Despite the apparent small portions, there was enough to satisfy even a greedy person, like me.

Sanko-in is an easy 1 hour from central Tokyo. But nearby is the amazing Architectural Museum, which is a nice walk or a few stops on the Cho Line. Plus there is the Ghibli Museum (book months in advance for that!) which is not far either. So the trip west could well fill a day with great variety.

You can try what kind of food the monks and nuns in japan eat, we call it Shoujin-ryouri.
If you wanna try to cook and eat them, you need to book in advance, They have the activity on limited days.
