Highly recommend a trip to Drenia islands (laying off Ammouliani Island). Take your snorkel. No need to hire your own boat for E60 plus petrol...goodness knows how much they would charge for this!!! As a quaint ferry leaves from Ouranpolis every hour on the hour for E5 return! The one beach bar is not over-priced and super-chilled. We went in early June and there was hardly anyone around. No doubt it will be a very different story in July and August when it could become a bit Butlinesque, but with a Carribean Sea! There are super little coves (around to the right as you look at the beach bar from the sea), which will allow you to escape the crowds. Great snorkelling on the 'rocky side' of the island, and worth the scramble to get up to the path that runs on the ridge of this side- but mind your footing- not for the faint hearted! Enjoy. We did.

We caught the 5 euro return ferry from Ouranoupolis to Drenia which takes 15 minutes. Lovely beach by the jetty with a swimming area where everybody pitches up under the free umbrellas with a cafe and bar. Personally, I walked 200 metres to the right and found deserted little beaches and rocks and went exploring. The quiet areas were stunning and a real Greek coastal paradise. Don't stay with the crowd, explore ...it was worth it and made my day. You can swim to two or three tiny islands if you're an average swimmer with no problems.

For €5 you can take a ferry boat to the island ( locally known as donkey island) and the price includes use of a sunbed. There is an excellent restaurant and beach bar. The water is shallow and warm. You could easily spend a day here. Last boat takes you back at 7pm.

We were a group of friends who participated in an organized tour from the village of Ammouliani. The tour cost 11€ and leaves every day at 12 o'clock from the main harbour in the village and starts with a tour around the island of Ammouliani. The driver of the boat told us some information and anecdotes as we passed the different parts of the island. Unfortunately he only spoke Greek, but fortunately one in our company could translate it so we understood. After about one hour we arrived at Pena Island beach where we had about 45 minutes to discover the island and take a swim. After that the boat took off to the main island were you can find a beach bar and a tavern. We had lunch and then took our places at the sun chairs placed on the beach. You have about 3-3,5 hours before the boats leaves and takes you back to Ammouliani where you return at around 6 pm.
The islands are magnificent, my favorite was the more deserted Pena Island where you could see some goats and have an impressive view of Mount Athos. The beaches were more wild in the sense that you could find sea urchins just outside the shoreline on one of the beaches, so keep an eye open for that.
Taking the organised tour was quite practical since we were 18 in our group, but otherwise I think renting a smaller boat on your own could be a good alternative. Then you can really discover the islands in your own time.

If you are staying in Ouranopolis you must visit Drenia Island! It takes about 15 minutes to get there by boat which costs 5 euros return journey! The boats from 10 and last pick up from the island is at 6!

The water is crystal clear, it's great for snorkelling! You can swim over to some of the smaller islands from Drenia.

There is a bar and taverna serving simple food and drinks. Sun beds are free of charge!

It's a beautiful, relaxing experience.

I would recommend getting up early and going for the entire day! We went 3 times during our holiday! Paradise!

it's spectacular and a to do when you get in this area, you can rent a boat all day (we rent it from 10.00 to 18.00) and complete a round of the island, many spots for snorkeling and swim. the landscape is beautiful with clear water.

Drenia is a small island next to Ammouliani island, only accessible by boat. Very peaceful place, there are two restaurants on the beach and great amusement park in the sea, something like "Wipe out", excellent for kids...
