About
This fortified farmhouse was erected in the middle of the ninth century and it looked like a tower-house whose facilities served to shelter agricultural commodities. The Castle of La Rancia was enlarged in the fourteenth century by order of Rudolph II dof Varano and it was also used as a residence. The keep , about 25 meters high, is divided into six flooers connected by a spiral staircase. In the ealry fifteen century, Braccio da Montone, a distinguished leader from Perugia, arrived in the Marca to fight against Ludovico Migliorati, Lord of Fermo, and took up quarters in the castle. In the 1430s and 1440s Francesco Sforza, his wife and part of his army were accomomodated in the castle, where Niccolo Piccinio signs a peace treaty in 1442 in the service of the Pope. One of the most important dates to remember are 2 and 3 of May 1815 when all around the castle was the scene of a raging battle between the French army of Gioacchino Murat, king of Naples and Napoleon's brother-in-law, and the Austrian troops of General Federico Bianchi.

In the middle Chienti valley there is this majestic castle, born as a fortress and transformed over the centuries into a noble residence, it was the scene of the epic clash in 1400 between Braccio da Montone and the troops of Migliorati, even if the battle for which it is remembered is that of 1815
considered by some historians to be the first battle fought for Italian independence
The troops led by Prince Gioacchino Murat, King of Naples, brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Austrian army commanded by Baron Federico Bianchi clashed near the Castle. Every three years, a historical re-enactment of the battle is held for two days.
It's a shame that we were only able to visit part of the archaeological museum because it was being reorganised, the permanent exhibition of the Compagnia Della Rancia is beautiful, we were very impressed, I recommend a visit if you are in the area for the modest sum of 6 euros, the manor is very well kept , there are always different temporary exhibitions, we were able to visit the exhibition "around the fire 10,000 years ago" an exciting journey to discover the Mesolithic, the era of the last European hunter-gatherers, characterized by flint artefacts, bone remains of animals arrows for hunting and a hearth, remains of a hunter-gatherer camp dating back to around 11,500-8,400 years ago, I was very struck by a display case containing a specimen of Columbella rustica, a sea shell that was collected and drilled to be used for ornamental purposes.

There was a loggia area where the wedding was held - a great spot! Didn't see much else other than the courtyard and some of the archaeological exhibits - but those were interesting. The castle is in a lovely rural area just outside of Tolentino - stop by of you are in the area, but probably not a destination castle on its own.

The castle is interesting in its reconstruction. It is good to be able to see areas that were used as cellars and stables etc even though it is not furnished. You can also go to the top of one of the towers. The museum pieces were fascinating with works from Prehistoric times. I was particularly interested in pottery from 5th and 4 th century BC Athens. Quite easy to access the castle as it's not far out of Tolentino.

We visited this castle but were a little disappointed.
Many rooms were closed or under construction and the external walkways were closed due to works after the earthquake.
The only truly interesting attraction, for those who love theatre, is the room concerning the ration company. In this room there were stage clothes, shoes, hats and some pieces of scenery.
The guy at the entrance was very kind and let us bring our dog. Luckily we took advantage of the Fai discount otherwise the cost of the ticket would not have been worth the visit.

We were on the autostrada and saw this small castle. There was one other couple there so we were generally able to wander about undisturbed. It was a great find, easy to access and well worth the admission.

The castle is quite interesting, nice and has been totally restructured. This could be negative but the works have been done respecting styles and architerctural characteristics and everything is kept in very good conditions.

This wonderfully restored/preserved fortress is easy to access from the highway beside which it stands. As noted by other reviewers, much of the facility is empty and thus somewhat disappointing. Other rooms do contain some displays but there was very little English so we found it more challenging to learn and appreciate the history of the site. Great view from the ramparts, though.

Majestic. Imposing. Great. Truly beautiful externally and internally. The exhibition of the clothes and sets of the Rancia Theater Company is appreciable.
