Kappa Pool is a five-minute walk south from Denshoen, which is located a few kilometres northeast of the centre of Tono city on National Route 340. Entering through the gate of Jokenji Temple, you will come to a small stream flowing at the back of the temple. It is said that many kappa live in the pool of this stream, where they frighten and play pranks on people.
With its clear, flowing water, Kappa Pool gives the impression that a kappa might appear at any moment. On the bank of the pool there is a fishing rod with a cucumber tied to it. Perhaps you can catch a kappa with this fishing rod.

It may be the most famous tourist attraction in Tono as the setting of the Kappa legend that appears in Tono Monogatari. Take a walk to get a taste of the folktale, or for the romance of encountering a Kappa that hasn't been heard of since it was spotted in 1974. There is no parking along the stream, so park your car in the Denshokan parking lot and walk about 8 minutes. Along the way, there are hop fields and kappa teahouses representing Tono, so you can enjoy walking around.

Near the Joken-ji Temple is this well-known “Kappa-buchi” or the river trench where “kappa” live according to some stories found in the Legends of Tohno (“Tohno Monogatari”). Local people say that the “Kappa-buchi” doesn’t look as mysterious as it used to since a major repair work was made to this local stream several years ago.

In the area are a small prayer hall with “kappa” figures and a sign there says “you must obtain a ‘Kappa Catching Permit’ if you wish to catch a “kappa” here.” There was in fact a fishing rod and line with a cucumber as bait. (Cucumbers are considered the most favorite food by “kappa.” Sushi lovers must have heard the sushi menu called “kappa-maki” for cucumber rolls. The name is from this legend.) There was also a totem pole like wooden “Kappa” figures nearby.

This tourist attraction is perfect for families and children. There are fishing poles with cucumbers on them that you fish with. If you are lucky, you will catch the folklore legend: THE KAPPA! This is a beautiful area for a picnic, as it is a very shaded/flat area. It is beautiful to visit in the Fall/Spring. Enjoy this Mystic Legend!!

If you're not interested in the mythology of kappas, then this place might get lost on you. In front of Kappabuchi is Jokakoji temple, which is small but still interesting with its kappa statues. Our taxi driver pointed out that the lion dog statues were actually kappa dog statues, with little concave sections at the top of their heads!
Walking through to the left of the shrine is another kappa and a bridge. Cross the bridge and follow the path to the right and you'll come to Kappabuchi. There's fishing poles to catch kappas, and a small small shrine with a mysterious picture of a man affixed to the back wall. Sadly we did not catch a kappa.
It's cute and picturesque, but no, there isn't much there other than things to inspire the imagination. So if you don't know what you're looking at, and you have no interest or understanding of kappas, then you might find this place a waste of time.

Basically there's nothing to see here. It's just a stream round the back of a temple. It's also quite hard to find as the signposts disappear when you get to the area. We got directions from locals but it wasn't worth it. Don't bother!

This is a nice place to come to learn about the little kappa creatures that are favored in the old folktale legends. I really loved this places. You could have a nice lunch and wait for one to appear.......maybe. :-)

The Tono area is reputedly the home of the Kappa, river sprites who love cucumbers. This little pond, adjacent to a small shrine, is the local place dedicated to the Kappa. It's quirky and cute, with fishing poles with cucumbers and some Kappa statues. The shrine is a quaint little one, also worth a look. If you're lucky, you might meet Kappa Ojisan, Uncle Kappa, an elderly gent who presides over the pond. An hour here is enough.

Fun enough if you're very interested in Kappa, however otherwise it's a rather unremarkable bit of river with a strange little shrine. There are fishing-rods with cucumber attached as bait that you can use to attempt fishing up a kappa, which is probably fun for kids and hardcore kappa-enthusiasts.
